Default HID @ 100degrees - VS - CFL's @ 80 degrees.
Take your pick. for FLOWERING ONLY
Which would you rather have. A HPS with temps in the growroom of at or around 100 degrees. -OR - CFLs with growroom temps at or around 80 degrees? I know your 1st question....how many CFL's right? Well I know its a difficult comparison. But the MAIN thing is the temperature.
If you want... go ahead and tell us where the limit is. In otherwords how many CFL's (in watts) would you need to choose the CFL's over the HID (say a 400w 50,000 lumen HPS) givin the above mentioned temperature requirements.

IF YOU HAVE NOT FLOWERED WITH BOTH CFL'S AND HPS PLEASE TAKE FROM THIS THREAD BUT DONT ADD TO IT!!!

Why can't you get below 100 degrees with HPS? If you don't have or can't install proper ventillation, I wouldn't be using the room for flowering to begin with. I've done both CFLs and HPS for flowering, and I'd always recommend HPS unless the space is just too small or you can't make the necessary modifications to the walls to ventillate the room. But with that said, if you don't have any ventillation (i.e. intake and exhaust) then you shouldn't be growing or especially flowering in that room.

OK OK to clarify THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM I AM HAVING. YOU CANT CHANGE THE RULES THIS IS LIKE A POLL. STICK TO THE CONDITIONS PLEASE! THE TEMPS ARE WHAT THEY ARE. ALL OTHER CONDITIONS ARE EQUALL (EXCEPT FOR WATTS)

100F would burn your plants to a crisp. can't do it...unless you got some strains that are accustom to high heat. Only way I see using HPS would be ventilation obviously.

If you only had the option of 100 degrees vs 80 degrees, I'd go with the 80 degree climate. Only because 100 degrees is way outside the ideal climate range. HPS vs CFL has no influence in my answer to the question if you can't operate a room with HPS while keeping the room from getting as high as 85-90 degrees. But like I said, that's assuming you can't ventillate or provide cool air properly, which should be the only reason you can't control the temp. I'd say this is one of those situations where the grow room limits you to CFLs.

TYVM for your well stated response. I would still like to hear more opinions.

Put me down for the HID's @ 100 degrees (I trust you mean farenheit?), with one condition - added CO2, boosted to about 1,500 parts per million. That is to say that either, theorhetical grow (HID or CFL), had boosted levels of CO2 - thereby keeping the conditions "equal".

I don't understand what the point is, of asking a question that is so biased. It's like asking a man, "Do you still beat your wife?

With no qualifications; the only choice you give, that makes any sense at all is "CFL's @ 80 degrees". May I ask, just what is your poll trying to decide?

Strangely enough, my hps runs cooler than the butt load of cfl's I used in my first grow.A 150 watt hps, IMO,has soundly beaten the crap out of the 300 or so watts of cfls I used.
