18/12 Light Cycle?

From what I know, the dark period induces the flowering cycle. When the nights get longer the plant senses it's time to bud. But could I get better results if I left the light on lets say 18 hr and then let it have 12 hr of darkness? Does the plant sense the length of the day just as it senses the length of the night? Any help is appreciated

Here is something worth checking out in advanced techniques. I just keep things simple and go with 18/6 and 12/12, but its your grow and you can try anything you want.
"The only photoperiod manipulation from years of experiments that offered discernible improvements was this adjustment made for 1 or 2 calendar weeks at the point of maximum flowering rate"

So according to this article, changing the light cycle towards the end of flowering does have a positive effect and he's saying that it's only useful at a certain time in the plant's life. Does this mean that elongating the hours of light (from 12hr to 16hr+) will keep the plant in veg. period? I guess what I really want to know is whether light affects the transition of the plant into its flowering cycle. Because if it was only the dark period, 12hr, then it would only make sense to me that more light would be helpful for making more bud. Hope this all makes sense. Thanks for your responses
