I have read both side of this. Some people say that light from below does not help plants at all. But yet others say it does.

What do all of you think?

my lower branches would have only a pistil or two if it werent' for the 400w hps side light...

Not really talking side light shining down. I am talking side lights shining up.

In other words, will the leafs use the light coming from below with their Photosynthesis

They will turn there fan leaves to the strongest source of blue light. So yes if the lower branches aren't getting any light, or if the light is stronger coming from the bottom, the leaves will turn them selves depending on that. then the plants will process the light through photosynthesis, but only through the top of the fan leaves.

If you mean light coming from like the direction of the floor shining up then no. The undersides of the leaves do not take in light. They are not made for that. That is like trying to get a suntan on the palms of your hands.

Side lighting yes.

I was kind of hoping he is correct. I have room down there for more lights.

it's all about penetration; i have a 400w hps on the floor, shining up at an angle toward the plants. most of the light hits the undersides, but you can see the leaf "glow" if you will. that is enough light penetration for the leaves to use the light, even thought it's not direct. i'll take pix tonite, show you what i mean.
