Thumbs up The mystery of the purple stem answered!
So I often see the thread questioning the purple stems that show on fan leaves. I have come to the conclusion that these leaves are just dead weight once flowering begins.

Once the flowering process starts, you want the plant to focus on one thing... bud production. If you think about it, the fan leaves only fall off on there own as you get closer to the end, and as that maternal clock kicks in and she just goes nuts for that male seed shes not gonna get. This means that your nutrients are being used by these leaves that don't do anything but redirect energy from bud production. Anyone else ever have a plant that doesn't drop fan leaves until you flush? Why do you think they only die off when you don't give them food?

The stems that have turned that purple/reddish color are always below the top node, so really you only need the fresh fan leaves, and the leaves on the actual bud sites. If you doubt it, try it, and watch your yield go up!

Remember, just the purple stemed fan leaves, and only as flowering begins, before that I only pull off the bottom rows.

HAPPY GRWING!

That's nice to know about the leaves falling off as things progress, that has always been the situation but I always wondered if I was having nutrient problems and needed to change something but looks like I've been doing things right all along, who would have thought.

and ya gotta remember nature. I've had gardens all my life and never have I seen any annual fruiting plants' leaves NOT deteriorate as the fruits mature.
Beans, tomatoes, etc. all see their lush and vibrant green leaves go downhill once fruiting takes off.
