Lightbulb ~ RIU SLGG Support and Questions ~

Hello everyone, I've decided to start this thread to give users a chance to post questions and comments on the Soil/Less Growers Guide without taking up space in the thread for posts.

Thanks to everyone that has left comments on the thread, I'm glad you're enjoying the information. I'll be posting the Vermicomposting article I've been working on tonight or tomorrow morning, hope everyone stays tuned, the updates will keep coming .

Please leave comments on what you'd like to see covered in a write-up, and I will do my best to do a detailed report on different aspects of organic growing.

Thank you everyone, the link for the thread is in my siganture if you're interested in viewing . Peace and Love

    Default Controlled Compost

Thanks for the articles on composting. I have some questions.

Organics is about creating living soil rich in organisms. Is your set up actually inside your house and created in a controlled situation? What about compost created outside on the ground where it interacts with the earth. Will this soil have undesirable organisms?

Do you plant directly in the compost or top dress with compost?

I have cats that use wood pellets for litter. The result is urine soaked sawdust which I use in an outdoor compost pile after removing the feces. Would this bio matter be suitable in a controlled compost?
    What was the question?

Yes, my compost is actually split into double duty. I have two warm active piles that compost is transfered and in and out weekly in my grow space (currently not occupied). I use heat mats, usually for germination, under my piles to speed up the compost for short-term usage. I run an outside vermicomposting system as well, no need to ever purchase castings and rich organic soils ever again . This system takes a little longer (4-6 months), but with the warm pile inside I have a constant supply.

It depends on your environment really. This is the number one way to inhabit your compost and in turn soil, with nasty mites or aphids. If you follow the diagram for the compost pile I included you shouldn't have any problems with insects. I also try to collect ladybugs for my compost piles as they do a magnificent job of eating undesirable insects and such in and around the compost.

Do you plant directly in the compost or top dress with compost?
I mix my compost with my soil mixture, well mixed. You can use it as a topping but once as a seedling and again at the beginning of flowering. It's much more efficient to mix into the soil, that hugely contributes to the conditioning of your soil, but it depends on how much compost you have available to you and how much your soil recipe calls for

Yes indeed, sawdust however has a very high C/N ratio (nearly 500:1) so you would need to offset with many lower ratio organic substances.

Good questions, hope you can find everything you're looking mate, I'll be around

Thank you Doctor . By placing chicken manure pellets or other controlled-release fertilizer or slow-release organic material in the bottom of plug trays before seeding or planting, you can help avoid plants running out of nutrients, and is especially helpful when growing organically since your plants will always have that layer in which they were first planted to absorb nutrients. Hope that helps you mate

I dislike all advertising and most of it is inflated as to the benefits. I'm glad that the owners of this site are making advertising dollars however I choose to ignore banner ads.
    What was the question?
