Dude i´m not from US but from what i ear u can build yourself a nuke with the stuff wall mart sells.......the nutes i would go with one of those Micro+Grow+Bloom packs they are not to expensive and fill out the needs more then fine (and aren´t as tricky to use as the organic ones), just give the plants half the solution of what is recommended by the brand and you will be fine...

I know for a fact that they sell 2 or 3cheaper soil pH testers for under 20 bucks....but thats more of a stick it in the soil when its wet and see what the pH roughly is.
