Default New Germination Technique (if all else fails)
Hi

I brought some seeds from Nirvana.

These seeds where big bud. Only two germinated under normal germination procedures.

After a couple of weeks had passed I decided instead of chucking them in the bin to do a little experiment.

I soaked them in water for 24 hours then removed the seed one at a time.

(Now this take some patience)

With an extremely steady hand place the seed between your finger and thumb. take a scalpel and there is a grove down one side. Gently scour a line from top to bottom. Apply pressure afterward to reveal the light green colored inside. Looks like a curled up root. Carefully tease away a little casing just enough so it is exposed without having to squeeze it.

Mix up some stilled water and add some very diluted nutrient and I used a pinch of powder rooting compound.

Get your medium and place the seed into it. Soaking it with the mixture you have just made.

I had 8 like this and after three days 2 have sprouted. I will update this thread if any more do in the next day or so.

Well...i guess opening up the seed coat may help if the coat is too tough and causing the problem...i do not however recommend adding any hormones to seeds...they just do not need it, it messes with the proteins and lipids they use to germ. You could have scuffed the seed with some fine sand paper to get more water into them and maybe allow them to germ that way. My 0.02

well, if i'm not a advocate of opening seeds but i'm on for the use of hormones which have proved to be damn effective in sprucing seeds. a tiny bit of clone/rooting hormone on the seed and the grow-medium of choice and i had so far the spruce out within 48h to 100% with quality seeds. and that not only with me.

I am almost sure that the seeds didnt germinate because the shell was way to hard. I even soaked them for 24hrs and they where still hard.

Seems to be either this strain or batch as I germinated some papaya at the same time and the same way with no problems.

Sandpaper seems like a good idea. Very fine sandpaper tho :/

well that would weaken the shell sufficient enough to do the trick but the shell must be still intact and only ruffed up slightly or you gone kill whats in it and i would rather see it as a last effort then as a first try method. rather go with hormone treatment, saves a lot work

I use a finger nail file to scuff my seeds.

Then I soak them, 24hrs to soak the seeds seems to be overkill (I've never had a seed that was viable that took longer than 12-14hrs to sink)

from there they go to the shop towel between 2 plates (i dont use paper towels anymore bcuz the bleach in some brands can kill the seeds before they even show a taproot.)

then when the taproot gets to be about 1/8th inch I plant it (bcuz seed have growth spurts just like big plants do, and when the seed has 1/8th inch taproot, its gonna have a growth spurt to be about 1/2 inch and I'd prefer it to happen in the medium rather than in the towel.)

hmm...now im really currious about rooting hormone and seed germination...i always heard that seeds had everything they needed to germ, and that hormones and nutes messed with the chemistry...but i'll have to do more research unless you got a link that I could check out...thanks
