They are a gimmick.
Technically I believe all cfl's put out the same levels of ions. Anything that runs a high voltage does that including HID lights but they are completely innefective against any odor except maybe a dirty sock right under the thing if you stand 20' away.
(provided your dirty socks don't smell much at all.)

Don't bother with even a full size ionizer though, they can't do a thing to offset the total STANK of weed.

You can use dryer sheets on your exhaust, that'll work for a week or two. Or you should DIY an activated charcoal/carbon filter or buy one retail if you aren't a diy type of guy.
