Default Whats wrong with my 250 watt HPS bulb/setup?

Ok i powered on my 250w HPS setup for the first time today and the bulb looks like one of those bulbs in the back of spencers, where you put your hand on the bulb and you can see electrical currents/electricty traveling to your fingers. IDK why this is hapenning anyone know why??....also the bulb is a PHILLIPS 250w HPS...Im new to this setting up the ballast and stuff.

hps take a while to turn on when they are cold, just leave it on for a while and it should kick on

how long is a while because i've had it on for 1 hour and still nothing but i will continue to wait....

It looks like the initial pulse required to create the plasma in the tube isn't working, instead you just have arching between the electrodes not an even plasma. It is most likely a ballast issue but could be due to a bad bulb where the seals have leaked. Try another bulb, if that doesn't work try a new capacitor, if that doesn't work... but a commercially constructed ballast because yours is fucked. Also check your wiring, you may have a bad connection, make sure your not using those weather proof wire-nuts, they have a silicone gel inside that causes more harm then good and creates a bad connection. Hope thats helps...

Actually, does your ballast even HAVE capacitor? I didn't see it on the photo and thats needed for an HPS ignition.

yeh you do have a capacitor, where did you get this ballast from? No offense, but if you don't know what the capacitor is you really shouldn't be touching a ballast like this, you need a pre-built and encased one. Even I get nervous about wiring a raw ballast and I have electrical experience and training.

got it fromsome guy on ideninsider.com he said all i needed was a lamp/reflector. and i got one today and its not workin right.

the deal was Exactly, Ballast, Ignitor, Cap, and bulb. No enclosure for $65 shipped

EDIT: I fiddled around with the wiring and got it to come on but it looks very dim. i'll try another bulb.
