Yield Vs. Planter Pot Size??

What are some rules to follow with planter pot size during veg. and flowering to get the best yield??? I forgot some of the basics and need to refresh my memory.

1 gallon for each foot of growth

Depends on how big you want it to be. Should end up with at least 2 gal pot. I use 2.5 gal
