in all honesty I thought my carbon scrubber had a slight vanilla smell which I started to notice less and less back when I used to use it. You're fine

I thought it would smell like carbon if it was working right. the carbon itself inside the filter smells like cake. should I try baking it at like 180 or something, try kill off anything living in it just in case?

it could be some odd type of mold that is picky about where it grows. the carbon could be a perfect place for it to grow. this is just a guess. I have no clue what it could be yet, so it could be a health hazard, I really don't know. that's why it worried me all of a sudden. there are types of mold that grow in large air conditioner units and are deadly. my filter isn't damp, but who knows. I don't think baking it would hurt anything so I might try that and see if anything changes.

I talked to a guy at my local grow shop. his answers are usually pretty opinionated like everyone elses online, which should be expected. I think we figured out the problem. my carbon is spent. duh! I tried baking it at 400f for 20 minutes. didn't help at all, but the house smelled pretty good the whole day. I'll have to get fresh carbon soon. what I have now must be pretty saturated. it's getting stronger.

has anyone ever tried washing carbon? don't really have anything to lose trying it. does it help any?
