It really shouldn't be tough to rig up something for up/down movement.. Just a pully on a motor.. What kind of weight do you need it to lift, and how important is noise level? I'm thinking an old paper shredder, and a PWM circuit controlled by a 555 would be a good candidate..

okay that all sounds good but i lost you a bit.i need to have 4 1kw lights go up and down, im not sure what those things are 555 pwm :S anyways i was thinking if i could get a pulley system easy to do. i just need to have the pulley stop at one point and go back and stop.... how do i do it.
i could use one of these. just need a sensor of some sort to stop and go back...any idea's

couldnt you just have them on a timer to lower it a certain distance and then shut off?

you could use a horizontal light mover and kinda modify it? i dunno, i never heard of a vertical mover. use a horizontal one tho...

PWM is pulse width modulation.. Its a common technique for controlling motors accurately, and getting the most torque.. It does depend on what motor you're using though.. A big ass DC motor would make the easiest starting point..
A 555 is just a timer chip.. They can be salvaged from alot of electronics, or purchased for a few nickels.. That would just be to control pauses between movement though.. If its not a stepper motor you'd want some kind of physical trigger to terminate movement.. You can't trust a motor to just crank a certain amount in a given time..
See what motors you can find to work with.. That would be the 1st step..

I was thinking that too, but my guess is it won't be strong enough to lift upwards unless they were designed with overkill..
How heavy are the hoods for these 1K's?
