A slice of potato placed on the soil for a few hours will fill with fungus gnat larva. Lift, verify (you'll see them) discard, replace. When the taters clean, so are you.
Fix your watering routine? The sand thing apparently works too, as many use it.
I'd recommend you do the potato first if you do both.
I think W-Mart sells 'em?

Nah, I know i've got them... don't even need the potato.
I move soil around yesterday, saw a fly come out. I caught it with a piece of tape, and put it under my microscope. Sure enough was a fungus gnat.

I had those too, that is before I just lost all my plants to spider mites.
So, I guess when I start up again after I'm done bombing for mites my next plants will have sand in tops of them. One inch?
Can't they just get out through the drainage holes? I didn't know I had them until I watered and noticed microscopic larvae had come out of the drain holes in the overrun by the hundreds. The version of gnat I have is so small they can fly right in front of my face and I couldn't really see them for sure, just thought maybe I saw something. I also couldn't see the larvae except when they jumped around in the water when looking with a microscope. Long white oval shaped larvae with two antennae, that's all I can tell. I wouldn't have seen the larvae but I was looking for spider mites floating in the water.
When reading up on them I see it says to let your house plants go dry for two weeks and because they only live for 8 days that can get rid of them. However I can't go two days in flowering without needing to water, so I don't see how people say it's because you are overwatering or watering too often when there's no choice but to continue to water. (I admit to using small containersl, hey I have a small grow...)

I've stopped keeping potatos and other items that gnats are attracted to. Sand is pretty cheap, but unfortunately I did not catch the problem in time, and the poor little roots were consumed fully by the larvae... I have since invested heavily in gnat/aphid sticky traps to keep in pots...

I'll surely try the potatoes but I'd rather find a chemical to just kill the hell out of them and or make sure they can never come back.
I've never had the same level of bug problems as I do in this place I'm at now and I'm sick to death of bugs, I want to kill them all with the most lethal stuff I can get away with that won't kill me too when it's time to smoke.
What I find unbelieveable is that the little larvae can exist at all with the garbage soil and nutes I feed the plants with. (miracle grow)
Shouldn't that stuff have burned the larvae as much as it burns little clones I put into it?

Fungus gnats will thrive in the most disgusting of conditions. My little brother had an infestation just from being a slob.

I'm a natural slob but I have the woman of the house on me here so it's not like I leave stuff just laying around rotting collecting bugs. My version of slob is more about leaving things that don't rot or stink laying around, like clothes and everything not bolted down.
I think I'm having so much trouble just because of where I'm at on the edge of country living in suburbs. One block away is a massive field of hay or something, and the yard is just saturated with bugs no matter what I do so I think I don't have a chance in hell of ever being completely bug free here, I'll just have to control their numbers. If the sand works and they don't just get in and out through the drainage holes that would be great, or the potato.
I'll try both when it's time again.
