OK so i just picked up a new agromax magnetic ballast and not only is it louder than my cheapo growbright but it runs hot as hell

how hot can these run and still be safe / effective.

id hate to see it melt the coils

how hot is it you ask .. id bet you couldnt touch anywhere on the case for longer than a millisecond before you blistered your hand

so my question is how hot is too hot for these ballasts

Some can get really damn hot, that's why you're supposed to put them on something fireproof like a sheet of drywall or at least mount it to a board but don't let it sit in contact with your mylar or any other junk in the room.

Remove the case. It will let it cool more quickly.
