Most humane society's will lend you a Havahart style live trap - once you catch the critter, fill an ice chest w/ water & drop the trap in.

eah they where bell peppers just starting to turn purple and some jalapenos and some green bells.
im in the city so my gun is out of the question, beside the kind of mess my gun would turn the raccoon into, funny as it may be, will stink. i would shoot it if i where in the country though.
humane sociaty live trap huh? srry to say i take no prisoners.
ahh okay so ill give em a call about the cage tomorrow i dont have to worry about any peppers right now but its a loss.
My second (and late) thought is that your pest may very well be an Opossum - they are typically a bit more "omnivoric" than a Raccoon & I would suspect one of them first.
Any prints in the dirt around your plants?
One thing you can do is screen the dirt in a likely area so you could see the signs of what ever it is.
Possum's and Coons have very similar footprints, but they do have differences.
Canned Cat food would be my bait of choice if I were trying to catch one or the other.
