Its called Metrosideros polymorpha. Its a flowering plant endemic to my great state of Hawai'i! In Hawaiian we call it Ohia Lehua.
Also, its the main food source to one of my favorite birds, the I'iwi (the 'w' is pronounced as a 'v'), also known as a Hawaiian Honeycreeper:

That bird is majestic.
All your seeds are belong to me.
DSC01059.jpgthis is not a plant per se. i occasionally get asked if it is a sign of dead wood. or if it is a disease of some sort. it is a sign of non polluted air. it doesn't grow in cities for the most part cuz it won't tolerate pollution. it fixes it's own nitrogen and grows as an epiphyte on plants, walls, rocks and old wooden fences. i'm sure you've all seen it. so what is it? it grows in beautiful patterns and the colors are light grey greens. if you see it growing on your plants let it be. it harms nothing. and it's kinda cool. i got a pic somewhere of a garden bench covered with this stuff. every square inch.
