Default Square food gardening with mint Question.

Hi all. I remember reading a thing on here talking about 1 foot growing area for 1 kind of plant and keeping it in that space.

Now my adventure I wanna start with mint plants but my question is...

Can I get away with growing more then 1 mint plant of the same kind in 1 pot for example 2 to 4 mint plants of the same kind in a single pot or is it best to only stick with 1 plant per 1 pot?

I know that I can get away with doing it in hydro but I wanna do it in soil but didn't want to do it if I will run into problems.

Depends on how big your pot is, but in general, yes.

I'm actually currently growing several mint plants in one pot.

Mint, incidentally, is basically a weed. It grows like crazy, and if you're not careful, it can take over your whole backyard!

Mint if left alone in decent natural settings will spread so fast. I've seen it fill a 15x15 ft area
in 2 years from just 3 chocolate mint. We loved it.

I have just cloned 2 appelm mints and they are doing nicely in a 1 gal pot.
1 did get mixed with what I think is a sperimint so I do have 2 dif mints in one pot.

I expect them to out grow the pots in a week or two. The apple mint has started to
put out side shoots to try and gain ground to root.

I have trans planted a chocolate mint into the direct sun to keep it alive. Where I
planted it first never got enough sun. in all I had 6 different mints growing in the yard, I
want them to grow wild, now only maybe 4 are still alive due to no nutes and poor light.

Thanks. I plan on taking 4 cuttings and once they are rooted put them into a square 3.5 inch pot and try to keep a fast turn over to the 3.5 inch pots. Down the road I might see if I can find a square foot container and grow mint in hydro r try to get square 6 inch pots.

i grew mint last year in a 1 gallon pot buried into the earth. i did it that way to keep it from taking over everything. i just got around to tidying up the herb garden for this summer and the mint was growing all over the place. roots grew through the pot and sent up shooters everywhere.

    watch out for that stuff.

Growing out side isn't an option since the weather isn't good all the time and sadly there's people around here that would destroy it.

So I'm not worried about it growing all over the place inside.

Also thanks. I've seen people use the pot dug into the ground and always wondered if it would still get out.

AHHH mint! mint is easy. grow it on your kitchen counter in a small pot. CFLs will grow the shit out of some mint. it may try to spread, but with mint, you can just take it out of the pot, split the root mass in half or quarters, re-plant the parts and it will keep on going. come the middle of summer i give my outdoor mint's fractions to neighbors. same with just about any kitchen herb, thyme, basil, lavender, parsley, etc... im considering dropping a plug of mint and lemon thyme into my deep water culture's extra locations just to see what happens. course the smell of mint and thyme repell insects too, so it may be a fine option. i know they drive back aphids and white flies (all my tomatoes get a minty friend in their pots) but what about spider mites? anybody know?

mint, like strawberries can spread by root propagation, or, by sending out exploratory runners. last year my spearmint sent a single long tendril along the base of my house till it popped up under a drippy hose bib 20 feet away. when i pulled it up after fixing the drip, it just kept coming. this year the hose bib already has a few sprigs of mint popping up from roots that didnt come up with the tendril, so fuck it.

    herbaceous rhizomatous perennial plant
that means it dies down to the ground in fall and spreads just under the soil with these "roots from hell", and boy does it ever.
