Default Why do people dislike deer? Here's why..
I grow outdoors and am always looking for and trying out new ways to protect my crops. During peak garden season I tried Liquid Fence brand pest repellant on my garden and was extremely impressed with its performance. In case you've never heard of it, it is a spray-on liquid that is primarily made of putrified eggs (rotten eggs) and garlic. Organic? Perhaps, but it smells so damned bad before it drys that it can make you throw up. After seeing how well it worked on my vegetables (I never sprayed it on the fruit itself... only the leaves surrounding it) I also used it on my MJ leaves (once again, being careful to only get it on the leaves). One drawback is that it can dry to a white powery film under some circumstances and make your plants stand out more. After growing season I stopped using it. Here's what happens after it wears off. This picture is a row of okra that I was letting continue to grow for seeds. The two deer that frequent my property have eaten every single leaf off the plants, tearing down the string-and-ribbon fence to get to them. They never touched the pods themselves. When the Liquid Fence was on the plants they avoided them like the plague...

Sounds like two shots from a 30 30 will do the trick.
You saying that string fence actually kept anything away?

I didnt really believe this when I heard it cause it sounds kinda far fetched But apparently deer dont like the smell of leather. I was told that by putting an old leather boot or two around the grow they will tend to stay away. I dont know if it will actually work but it might be worth a shot. Also I know rabbits hate coco mulch (not the same as the coco potting medium people use) So perhaps deer might not like it either. Try spreading some of that around the bottom of the plants (it smells like chocolate, especially when wet).

Yes, string fences with ribbons or plastic bags detour deer to a point. Deer do not like to stick their heads through "barriers" to feed, for whatever reason. The movement of the plastic strips just makes them too uncomfortable to feed. Deer, while quite tasty, lack reasoning ability. I had my entire garden patch encircled with string and the only problem that I had was when they discovered that there was an opening that I had left in which to walk through, which they used until I blocked it with a shovel and post-hole diggers. Once the okra plants got so big that the leaves reached over the fence then they were back on them again until I started spraying LIQUID FENCE, at which point they found someplace else to dine.
