i picked a few ears of corn yesterday for supper. as i was shucking the last one in the sink i nearly shat myself when i peeled back the husk to find the weirdest thing i've ever seen growing on a corn cob.

obviously i didn't want to eat it, so i set this thing aside to let it dry and plan to separate these unique kernels for closer examination.

though viability is not a likely prospect, i may try to germinate one next year just to see what happens.

anyone else found unusual mutations in your garden?

Ive seen that growth on corn before, that is corn ergot. Similar to rye ergot, the chemist who showed me how to extract ergotamine showed me how to do it with corn. Be careful around that stuff, throw it out, and only keep it around in sealed containers, and only use a gas mask/gloves to handle it.
