Default Tomato leaf curl
Hey guys I was just wondering what the leaf curl on my tomatoes mean. I know they try to curl up when its to cold for them, but they still curl up a bit even on sunny days. The leaves are not dry from being under watered. I have them in a DIY earth box set up. My guess is the roots are drowning in the reservoir? Or did I mix to much "hot" soil into the normal top soil?

this is when i got them from a local nursery may 12th

This is them on June 1st

What is your soil mix? Tomatoes like soil that drains easily. I had a couple that had to be repotted with more peat/perlite.

I did a 50/50 mix with topsoil, and a soil mix called bumber crop, full of beneficials, guanos, dolomite lime, kelp, ect. then i threw in about 10-20% of pumice. But i am beginning to think I should have bot a bunch of perlite and peat like you mentioned. the soil has decent drainage but I have seen better. that might be my problem thanks.

Tomatoes need big root systems to grow properly.

I've got a horticulture book and the section on tomatoes says 'leaf curl isn't harmful to the plant as long as disease or pests aren't present'

Leaves curl on tomatoes when the day and night temps are far apart (hot day, cool night).

So as long as you're pest and disease free they'll be fine. Like the others said though, tomatoes do need huge root systems so they'd be better in the ground or at least in bigger pots - if they get rootbound growth will be stunted and you won't get as many tomatoes.

What 'strain' are the tomatoes?

Good luck.
