Unhappy Squirrels eating flowers!! HELP!
Squirrels are eating my Iris!! I've tried spraying them with different things but it hasn't helped. They act like they are digging for nuts or something but end up taking bites out of the exposed roots.

Any suggestions would be great!!

Do you actually see the squirells doing this? I see squirells, rabbits (HATE the rabbits) and lots of other "critters" in my yard. They eat just about everything BUT my iris's. In answer to your question...you can put down a mesh screening around the base of your plant that acts as a deterrent. It's often used when planting bulbs. Just ask someone in the lawn/garden dept...they should be able to direct you to the stuff.
My iris's didn't bloom last year......damn crazy weather had everything in mother nature confused last year.

I do see them and almost can get right up to them while yelling before they will stop!! I moved to a city 2 years ago and squirrels here are crazy they eat our before every Halloween!

1 of my 3 different colors bloomed last year. I felt lucky to have that as I just transplanted them last spring. I hopefully have white and deep purple that didn't bloom and the very common blue that did.

Thanks for the tip.

Hey..be happy you're in the city gardening and not the country. You'd be dealing with not only rabbits, but deer. Yeah, I love iris's. I had several colors going until my shitty neighbor decided to plant these hideous trees over them! Ha....his trees died (nothing I did.) So the a/hole replants the same hideous trees again this year.
People who read this will likely think me nuts (as if I give a shit)---but no shit, I was out on my deck just a few days walking down to where I had just planted some calidiums....and there sits this squirell. They love digging up bulbs.
I just stopped in my tracks and put my arms over my chest and began talking to the squirell. Squirells are so damn skittish, I was shocked that he just sat only inches from me seemingly attentive. I told that squirell that I worked HARD on my garden and he/she needed to respect that. I pointed out all of the WEEDS my surrounding neighbors had to munch on.....LOL, I was seriously appealing to this squirell that it PLEASE stay out of my garden. God as my witness, when I was done speaking, that squirell ran up a tree that was right on the line of my lot, got his buddy and scurried off.

Sometimes talking helps. I've tried that to and it won't work. The people in the country are usually more respectfull of such things (except you neighbor.. lol) maybe the same goes for squirrels!!

I thought the same thing!! both my neighbors have dogs and the squirrels love my yard. they get to stand on the other side of the chain link fence and tease them!!

Yeah, I've got the shittiest of shittiest neighbors. One would think when you put this kind of money into a home, you would take a little pride in your yard. Not these people.......overgrown weeds all throughout their lots. Can you say uncouth?
WTH? If that mesh doesn't work (which I'm certain it will)....opt for the beebee gun.

your all doing this the wrong way lol.

i live in uk and we have a huge population of red and grey bushytails. please dont kill them but feed them.

place a large'ish bird table in view for them, close too tree line edge or thier main entry into the garden. now fill table with seed and nuts ( hazel/sweetchestnut fresh apple and fruit etc) sit back and enjoy them and thier gymnastics it will also bring other birds insects into the garden and works better for you as pest control the natural way

feed in summmer and winter and they shall leave alone your bulbs and feed on the freebies you leave them.

right now im watching two magpies and a robin feeding on my freshly dug vegpatch and the freebie's i left out for them
