Default Whats the best way to germinate tomato & mint seeds
Ive purchased a pack of tomato & mint seeds but what is the best method to germinate them?
Can I just place the tomato seeds in a cup of water in the dark for 24hrs & then transfer it to soil?
And what about the mint seeds, they are tiny little balls, should I just pot them in moist soil?

The problem with mint is that the seeds are so incredibly tiny. I just put a pinch of seeds in a Jiffy pellet and kept it wet and I had a bunch of sprouts. I then thinned the smaller ones out and let the most robust sprout grow.

yes I know what you mean as I grow trays of mixed salad leaves and the seeds are tiny so I use tweezers and place them nicely apart by an inch or so.

I would sprinkle the mint seeds over some Rock Wool cubes and soak them in the dark for a few days then place on heat mat under some floros should do the trick.

best way is natures way.

seed trays, small furrows, sprinkle seeds along furrow, cover over lightly. stick into greenhouse/ seed shed.

be ready too start thinnging out they get kinda crowded out quick. with Green mint ( Mentha Viridis ) you want too sow march april may.

to sow mint inside:
in a tray with soil-less compost. cover with compost and mantain at around 20c. prick out into pots when large enough, transplant outside into rich soil, moisture retaining in the sun or shade.

your roughly looking at anything from 100 too over 1000 seeds a pack. i tend too take a small pinch and that will do nearly my whole seed tray. go careful too i have noticed that it can spread, this reason i grow my mint in containers.

harvest leaves at anytime, but for drying harvest them before plant flowers / flowers appear. i also like too test a small leaf, you will find these have a realy good flavour and not too underpowered for cooking.

Tami

I just put 3-6 seeds directly in the soil. I like to start some mine off indoors in peat pellets. They're convenient, especially when transplanting. Otherwise I scatter seeds in a small-medium pot and thin them out as they grow. Vegetable seeds aren't as expensive as cannabis so i see no need to germinate them out of soil. For mint, i think starting it in a pot of moist soil would be fine. It is a very hardy plant.

Well I guess try the paper towel method. If they still don't come up, then you know it's likely the seeds. You can always buy a small plant for real cheap though. The seeds may not be worth the trouble. Once it is established it will never die. NEVER. I accidently chopped one up and tilled it in last fall. About 2 weeks ago two popped up.

I threw my mint seeds on the ground and left them alone and they grew.

Try putting the pot you have them in on a heating pad on low and put some plastic wrap or something over the top to make a greenhouse effect. Once you get some sprouting, remove the plastic and place under a light.

I've not germed tomato seeds yet, but when I do I'm doing it the same way, greenhouse effect with heating pad.
