Need Help Nursing Wild Rose Bushes Back To Health
|
|
Aside from other obvious reasons why I'm on rollitup.com now, I'm hoping someone has some suggestions regarding wild rose bushes.
I have some in my back yard that are about 1.5 - 2 ft and a little scraggly. We just came out of the cold season in the last week or two and I'm at a pretty good elevation, about 7,000ft.
I figure I'm going to prune, dig a bed around em and give em some nutes.
Should I bring soil up to the base or leave the stem long?
Should I stake them?
Anyone with some past experience, I'd greatly appreciate some guidance.
 Happy Growing

Chop em down. Not too far though. Maybe a foot tall, but get rid of the tops. You want to leave the bottom what looks like a knot above the soil. I put mulch on mine over the soil up to the knot. You should be seeing some red or light green. That indicates new growth. Chop down to the new growth. This will promote blooms. As for nutes, a good mix of blood meal and bone meal into fresh soil around it. Try not to water the leaves, they will turn black with too much water on them. Watch out for spider mites and aphids, they can destroy roses. I use a dish soap mixture to spray them, it works very well. Hope this helps.

if you can cut some limbs off nearby trees to give them more light that makes them happy too.

Very good advice there, youve obviously had rose plants for awhile
After the disease is abit visible, the spread of the disease can be minimzed with pruning and the use of fungicides (actual infection cant be reversed) as chiceh said.
Also rose black spot, which is abit more common, can be a problem. Pick up old dead leaves from the base of the rosebush to prevent fungical infections.
Im trying to remember what the color of rose flowers mean. IE red=love etc, im going to check that later

For thos insterested in what the rose colours mean:
Red Rose
This one is the most obvious. It means "I love you." It represents romance and love.
Deep Pink
This simply means "thank you". If someone you know does something nice for you, a deep pink rose is a good way of saying "thank you".
Regular Pink
A pink rose represents happiness. It's great to give a pink rose to a partner to say, "I'm very happy with our relationship."
Light Pink
A light pink rose means "sympathy". When someone has had a loss then light pink roses is a very nice way of expressing your condolences.
White Rose
A white rose symbolizes innocence and purity. When combined with red roses (see further down), it represents "unity".
Yellow Rose
A yellow rose symbolizes friendship and caring. It's the perfect innocent gift to give to a friend or give to a loved one when you simply want to say "I care". When given to a friend it also means "I'm happy with our friendship."
Lavender Rose
A lavender rose is a symbol of "falling in love". When you give it to a person you are saying "I have fallen in love with you and am enchanted by you."
Orange Rose
An orange rose is a symbol of desire. "I desire you" or "I desire to get to know you better" is the message that orange roses send.
Black Rose
Never ever give a woman a black rose, because Hollywood has, unfortunately, made out the meaning to be "death". These aren't easy to find and some maintain that they don't actually "exist".
Blue Rose
A blue rose is very hard to reproduce or find, although some floral companies are trying to do it naturally. Others just die them. To some a blue rose symbolizes "mystery" and to others "attaining the impossible". A blue rose given can symbolize the rarity of your partner. You have attained the impossible.
Mixture of White and Red Roses
When you deliver white and red roses together to someone, it is a symbol of unification and unity. "May we always be together as one."

i've a question; do you know the name of your rose?
if not, do you know the color? is it a single bloom?
wild roses are easy; they grow wild, and seem to be hardier than any other (including jackson and perkins varieties) and can take almost anything. also, every wild rose i know of is a climber, so keep that in mind for placement and training.
