Default To All You Chili Growers...

hey, i was hoping i could get a little help with my first chili grow. i'm growing 2 plants from a 'Caribbean Mix' pack and one from a f1 hybrid jalapeño pack. one of the mixed and the jalapeño have been living under a 200w eco-lite and the other mixed, at my window. i've been feeding them chili focus from a young age and they all looked great until they started to flower.

the one at the window obviously took a little longer to start showing flowers but at least it is doing fine... where as the two under my light, all of the flower pods turned brown and fell off before they had a chance to open and pollinate. they are now at my window too.

is this directly to do with being under the light? i can't see why but it looks like the only explanation. has this ever happened to you guys? is there any way to recover or re-veg chillies? it's getting me down... i want to be testing my own hot-sauce when my weed's done!!

Are both plants flowers falling off or just the one by the window? Did you add dolomite lime to your mix, blossom end rot can be caused by lack of calcium.

if you look at the location of the poster you will see that they live in Scotland, very cold, but its not the window one that is bad

some of my flowers went rotten when it was very cold here, peppers and chillies love the warmth

never used lights so cant help there

they all live at the kitchen window (which is always open) now, the one that has always been there is going great... a couple of flowers are open and looking pretty! the other two seem to be doing better now too, there are new pods growing (very slowly but still...) on both plants so things are looking up

an other quick question; should i pollinate the flowers as they appear or wait until there are lotts of them?

Hey. I'm growing some chillis too. Check out my grow at DWC Bucket Chili Pepper

A quick google search turned this up for reason of flower drop.
Quote:
1. Day temp too high >95F
2. Night temp too low <65F
3. Too much nitrogen fertilizer
4. Too much water
5. Low light levels (reduces fertility).
6. Very low humidity (reduces fertility)
7. Poor air circulation (air circulation contributes to pollination).
8. Lack of pollinating insects.
9. Size of pot
10. Too much mineral in feedwater.
Anyway I was having a bunch of buds dropping also. I think my problem was high N as I was still using more of a vegetative formula for my nute solution. I lowered my N and I chopped off like 1/2 of the plant, figuring that cutting off the weaker parts of the plant that it could focus more energy into producing peppers. I just got home from the weekend and ive got a good handful of buds that have opened, now to see if i can actually produce some peppers. Good Luck.

i've got a few pretty little flowers on the go just now. the plants that had the problem are now producing new buds so i'm slightly less worried now. cheers for that bluebead... i think it may be low night temps thats causing it, it's getting chilly (haha pun intended) up here. i'm sure you, growing hydro, will be tasting the fruits before me so i'll be keeping an eye on your thread.

ciao folks
