St MARTIN, MS (WLOX) – A popular St. Martin High School teacher is accused of growing marijuana at his home.

Patrick Charles Walker, 51, has been charged with one count of cultivation of marijuana and one count of felony possession. Jackson County Narcotics agents raided Walker's home Wednesday night, and said they seized both drugs and drug paraphernalia.

The six year teacher was absent from class at St. Martin High Thursday. Instead, Walker was in the courtroom facing serious accusations. Narcotics Task Force Commander Curtis Spiers said drug agents busted him the day before for possessing and growing marijuana at his Rosemont Drive home.

“It seems to be on the rise,” Spiers said. "We seem to be seeing more and more, lack of a better term, home grown marijuana, and more and more localized marijuana."

Drug agents said they found half a dozen plants and more than $1,000 worth of harvested pot scattered throughout the bedroom and the backyard.

“We also recovered grow lamps, nutrients, fans, timers, fertilizers, and things use to mature these plants to make them healthy plants.”

Authorities said they received an anonymous tip, but Spiers said they had no clue it would lead them to a teacher.

“When you are talking drug and drug addiction you may think you know your neighbor, but there may be something there you don't know about them” Spiers said.

Walker's neighbors said they are extremely shocked about the alleged activity going on nearby, and admit it is pretty disturbing.

“I thought that teachers are the ones who are supposed to tell the kids, nine times out of ten, not to do drugs and not to be around drugs,” neighbor Courtney Wilson said. "You never think that would be coming from a teacher."

School officials say they are waiting on the outcome of the police investigation before deciding if Walker will return to the classroom. The assistant superintendent of schools, Michael Van Winkle, said no one saw it coming.

“We're very surprised,” Van Winkle said. “Just doesn't seem to be in character with the person we know who worked here.”

Walker is out of jail after posting a $15,000 bond.

LONG BEACH - And here we always thought marijuana was supposed to help you mellow out.

Turns out that wasn't the case Monday afternoon when two armed bandits shot a 41-year-old employee of a Long Beach medical marijuana clinic during a robbery at the location, police said Wednesday.

The robbery began at about 2:10 p.m. when two armed men entered the medical marijuana clinic in the 2600 block of Magnolia Avenue, said Nancy Pratt, a Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman.

One of the armed men pointed a handgun at an employee and threatened him while the other robber gathered all the marijuana on hand, Pratt said.

During the robbery, a scuffle broke out between one of the gunmen and a customer in the dispensary and the employee was shot in the lower body, she said.

The two armed men then fled the business on foot. It was not clear in which direction they traveled, she said.

The victim, a 41-year-old male, was taken to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, Pratt said.

The robbery comes on the heels of a string of armed robberies in the Lakewood and Long Beach area, but this incident does not appear to be related to the recent spree, Pratt said.
"It's a different suspect description," she explained.

Associated Press - November 18, 2009 8:44 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Officials say an elaborate marijuana growing site was found in an industrial building 25 feet from the back door of the Topanga police station in Los Angeles, and three people are under arrest.

Officer Karen Rayner says the pot was discovered Wednesday when a search warrant was served at an address adjacent to the station in Canoga Park.

The indoor marijuana farm included lights, automated irrigation and a ventilation system. Investigators say it had been there for at least eight months.

The investigation began a week ago, when officers smelled marijuana in the police station parking lot.

The suspects' names have not been released. Rayner says they face a number of narcotics charges.

A 33-year-old Jackson man accused of growing marijuana in his apartment could get up to life in prison if convicted.

In the case of Ronald Christopher Sekul, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics intends to ask prosecutors to apply a law called the "kingpin" statute, MBN Director Marshall Fisher said.

The statute can be applied to Sekul's case because he allegedly had a drug operation for longer than 12 consecutive months and had more than 10 pounds of marijuana, Fisher said.

Sekul was arrested Wednesday for allegedly growing 4-foot marijuana plants in the back bedroom of the fourplex he lives in at 1510 Myrtle St., according to MBN.

He is out of jail on $50,000 bond.

"It was a pretty sophisticated operation," Fisher said.

Sekul is charged with manufacture of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute and possession of two handguns and an assault rifle, Fisher said.

Authorities found 51 marijuana plants growing under florescent lights with a system set up to keep humidity levels optimal for growing in the room, Fisher said.

The plants could have produced 10 pounds of processed marijuana with an estimated $50,000 street value.

Sekul also was allegedly in possession of eight pounds of processed marijuana.
Agents seized growing materials usually seen in indoor marijuana operations, a .40-caliber handgun, a .22-caliber handgun and a .223-caliber semi-automatic rifle.

Investigators from the Jackson Enforcement Team were told about Sekul's alleged operation by an anonymous tipster, Fisher said.

JET, formed in August 2008, is funded by part of a $3.5 million federal grant.

"It's valuable to have different levels of expertise (with JET)," Jackson Police Department Assistant Police Chief Lee Vance said. "I think JET is a successful venture."

Sekul is the second Jackson person arrested in as many weeks with an alleged indoor marijuana-growing operation.

Fisher said indoor growing operations might be on the increase, but only slightly.
"We've seen a steady downward trend on outdoor growing over the years," he said.

On Sept. 18, the home of Zachary Alexander, 33, at 378 Naples Road, was raided and plants with an estimated street value of $325,000 were seized.

He is charged with manufacture and felony possession of marijuana. He is out on $5,000 bond.

MADISON — Legalizing medical marijuana will ease the cancer patients’ pain and help others who are suffering, supporters of legalization argued Monday.

Two Democratic state lawmakers, advocates and those fighting chronic diseases said at a news conference there is momentum nationwide to decriminalize the use of marijuana for medical reasons.

They pointed to Gov. Jim Doyle’s comments last month in support of legalizing medical marijuana for people who have a doctor’s prescription. Also, the American Medical Association called last week for a federal review of marijuana’s status as a controlled substance to make it easier to do research that could lead to development of marijuana-based medicines.

Everyone knows someone who would benefit if the law were changed, said Jacki Rickert, founder of “Is My Medicine Legal Yet?” She suffers from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and reflexive sympathetic dystrophy, bone and joint diseases that limit movement and lead to painful muscle spasms. marijuana eases the pain, she said.

Rickert, 58, has lobbied more than a decade to legalize medical marijuana in Wisconsin. She was arrested in 2000 when Mondovi police raided her home and confiscated marijuana. The district attorney later declined to press charges.

“We’re not criminals, we’re just people trying to get on with our lives,” said Gary Storck, who said he starting using marijuana in 1972 to treat his glaucoma and arthritis.

A similar bill was introduced in the Legislature in 2002 but did not pass.

Under the measure co-sponsored by Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Madison, and Sen. Jon Erpenbach, D-Waunakee, a person would need a prescription from a doctor to receive marijuana, which could either be grown at home or obtained through a licensed nonprofit dispensary. The state would keep a registry of both those who can receive and dispense marijuana.

The Department of Health Services could not estimate how many people would qualify for marijuana prescriptions, according to the fiscal estimate for the bill. Seventeen of 132 lawmakers have signed on in support.

“This law needs to be changed,” Rickert said. “We can’t wait any longer.”

Thirteen states have legalized medical marijuana, according to the National Organization for the Reform of marijuana Laws. The Wisconsin bill is up for a hearing Dec. 15, and Erpenbach said the goal was to have it voted on sometime in January.

The governor said last month that he had no problem with the use of marijuana to treat severe pain and other medical conditions, if it’s prescribed by a doctor. Restricting the use of medical marijuana makes no sense when doctors can already prescribe more dangerous drugs, such as morphine, he said.

Doyle’s comments come after a decision by the Obama administration not to prosecute users and suppliers of medical marijuana in the states where it’s been legalized. The decision is a clear break from the policies of the Bush administration and another sign pointed to by backers of Wisconsin’s bill that the attitude toward medical marijuana is changing.

DENVER — Colorado Attorney General John Suthers has issued a formal opinion saying medical marijuana is subject to state and local taxes.

The opinion issued Monday says only seeds would be exempt from sales tax in Colorado. Otherwise, it would be up to vendors to collect and remit sales tax on other forms.

Suthers says medical marijuana is considered personal property that can be taxed. He says it doesn't qualify as a prescription drug that would be tax exempt, and it doesn't generally qualify for agricultural tax exemptions. Retailers must have a state retail sales license.

An amendment approved by Colorado voters in 2000 allows marijuana use for "debilitating medical conditions," but marijuana remains illegal under federal law.

Associated Press - November 16, 2009 7:24 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles City Council may vote on a long-awaited medical marijuana ordinance on Wednesday that could force hundreds of dispensaries to close.

The ordinance seeks to prohibit the sale of marijuana at clinics that have sprouted across the city over the past year.

The ordinance would allow collectives, where pot is grown by members, to remain open but have to be at least 1,000 feet from schools, churches and hospitals.

City Attorney Carmen Trutanich and county District Attorney Steve Cooley recently said they would target stores that are profiting and selling to people who don't qualify for medicinal marijuana.

In 1996, California voters approved a ballot measure that allowed sick people with referrals from doctors and an identification card to smoke pot.

Published: Monday, November 16, 2009 4:08 PM EST
SANTA FE, N.M. — Businessman Len Goodman owns a company that makes hand-painted art tiles, but these days his office desk is strewn with the raw materials of a new enterprise: fat, sweetly pungent marijuana buds.

Newly licensed by the state to produce and distribute medical marijuana, Goodman must decide which strains he will grow in a steel-doored industrial building somewhere in Santa Fe County that will soon be converted into a high-tech indoor greenhouse.

“Every one is different,” Goodman said of the brownish buds in plastic bags. “It's like wine.”

While California confronts a proliferation of pot shops and Colorado wrestles with regulations, New Mexico is slowly and quietly breathing life into a 2007 law that allows patients with certain medical conditions to get relief from marijuana.

The first state to license producers, New Mexico gave the OK to one nonprofit in March and four others last week.

Patients with a qualifying condition — there are 15 — must get recommendations from medical providers, apply to the Department of Health, then, if they are approved, reapply each year.

There were 755 approved patients as of last week, according to the state agency.

“This is medical marijuana,” said Goodman, who submitted 100 pages of plans to the department to get licensed. “This is not de facto legalization.”

The licensing of four new nonprofits is welcome news to patients. The first provider ran out of marijuana shortly after it began distribution in July, and wasn't expected to have more for months.

With each producer limited to 95 plants, there was no way for one nonprofit to keep up with the growing demand as more patients were certified.

The medical cannabis program, as the department refers to it, “will continue to proceed carefully ... so we can meet the needs of our patients while not creating an excess supply,” Health Secretary Dr. Alfredo Vigil said when he announced the latest licensing.

The department doesn't disclose the names of patients or producers, saying it wants to ensure their safety.

Goodman, who came forward on his own, isn't critical of the department's policy but says he thinks patients and producers should be forthright.

“I think the faster we move away from a paranoid drug dealer model to a normal business model, the better it's going to be,” he said. “It's like coming out of the closet. If people are not out of the closet, nothing changes.”

Goodman arrived in New Mexico in the late 1960s and lived briefly at the famed New Buffalo community in Taos, inspiration for the commune scene in the film “Easy Rider.” He started Arius Tile in 1972.

He is also a registered medical marijuana patient, who says he smokes occasionally for post traumatic stress disorder stemming from a fatal automobile accident in 1992. He said marijuana helped him shake his longtime reliance on prescription anti-anxiety and anti-depression drugs and “became a medicine for me.”

He sees providing medical marijuana as a public service. His nonprofit, NewMexiCann, plans to do patient outreach and advocacy.

“Whether they buy from us it doesn't matter. We believe in medical marijuana,” he said.

He hopes to be able to begin distribution as early as February. He'll make deliveries to patients, rather than have a dispensary.

The health department estimates each producer should be able to supply about 100 people. Of the 755 approved patients, more than 200 have been authorized to grow their own marijuana.

Reena Szczepanski, director of Drug Policy Alliance New Mexico, who lobbied for the law, said the state-licensed production provision grew out of concerns of patients who didn't want to get the state's OK to use the drug then be forced to buy it illegally. It became a model for other states, she said.

Maine voters recently approved state-licensed dispensaries, and Rhode Island allows three nonprofit pot shops.

Szczepanski said it remains to be seen whether New Mexico's supply and distribution system will be adequate and workable.

“But the whole point of having a regulated system is we can find out these things,” she said.

So I was reading my high times January edition I just got and there is a article about how a man in canada named Rick Simpson has been making hemp oil(thc oil, honey oil) w.e you want to call to treat cancer as oppssed to chemotherapy or radition treatment. Along with many other things it's very jaw dropping to say the least. Aparrently medical studies have been done in Spain since 1999 as to the validity of this. Studies show that the hemp/cannibus plant a it properties make brain tumors in rat/mice eat themselves in layman terms. I really would like to do more research into this myself as I am a biology major in school. Idk you just have to watch this or read up about for youself to see what I'm talkig about. There's a 7 vidoe series of this on YouTube.com. Look up "cannibus cure for cancer". Seriously guys do it. I'll be posting this in the medical section too.
