Brother we all been there don't listen if they say they just started growing good herb. I been at it about 4 years now and I still learn, tweak and f&ck up still. That is why I grow mostly for relaxation and something that interests me and of course I get smoke.

Also don't take what someone says as "gospel" most of the advice will be it works for me but does it for you? I do things that work great for me but others frown upon, does that make it wrong? Hell no, do what works for you and your growing environment and style.

Oh and the biggest jump for me when I started to feel like I got this, was when I started keeping track of almost everything. I am anal, but you will get the point. I track plants ppm, ph, nutrient soup, height, root development etc.. on a daily basis and adjust most of my buckets. I mean "knowing" what is working and what you "think" is working will save you months of head banging. Keeping some sort of log will help you do that and shave months off your learning curve.
