i like the sound of that!

The Radioshack A-Hole tried to sell me on this ridiculous idea to buy a PC power supply and some PC fans ready to plug into the power supply, but thats just my cost up an extra 30-50 dollars bare minimum.

you will fry ur fans if u dont get the adapter. my buddy tried it n lost 2 fans

I have one of those fans. It runs just fine plugged into the wall with a regular cord. As long as the fan is 120VAC and it is heavy as all hell like mine is it will work great. I use a knob for a ceiling fan to adjust the speed of the fan. I think there are old pictures of it in Dub's album for his twin mother boxes. They aren't around anymore but the fan is. Maybe I'll post new photos.

So i need to make sure they are running AC and not DC? An inline dimmer switch can work for speed control? What do I do with the ground wire off the switch? Or is that just two conductor? Special housing for the knob (mounting box?)? I think this is what i'm going to do... i have lamp cord and an old dimmer wall switch and some sort of out door mounting box for the switch... am i on the right track

my idea is to take a spare shelf and stand it up straight against the back. it's already the correct width, and depth looks nice. planning to attach with zip ties (or something more permanent) and then the same with the fan in the lower corner.

also... since i have that damn near perfect trellis in the back. anyones thoughts on growing vertical (trellis style) in soil? i was thinking i could hang one side of the hood on chains. with it mounted this way i could angle it to shine directly at the trellis area. may take a bit of low and high stress training to coax a full trellis. but could it be worth it????

Right, as long as you have an AC fan you will not need to use a power inverter. A DC fan will need a power inverter like a pc power supply or a phone charger. DC fans do not have much CFM and will not keep your area circulated well. I would use a fan control knob over a light dimmer, they are very different. Dub did not ground it, but if you chose too then you need to setup a 3 prong cord. I see no reason to ground it, but if you want to just to be safe go all out. I have it mounted to a plastic box right now, no special box is needed unless you feel like making it up to code.

The hum is noticeable at full speed, I reduce speed to 75% and seem to be ok for 6 CFLs right now. Add more as needed, more fans at a lower speed will be more quiet than 1 at a high speed and give you the same CFM.

Dub built that so I take no credit for it. Sounds like a plan, just as a note, your intake should be low and your output should be high to promote air flowing past the plant then cooling the light, instead of heating the air and blowing it in the plants direction.

I would say you would have better chances with a horizontal ScrOG. But that is just me.

Let me know if you have any further questions or new pictures. I like eye candy.

sounds good to me. i used to be in A/V and home automation, i have piles of old lutron dimmer switches, call it "green" just for a laugh, but i plan to reuse one of those. one is a knob style similar to the one in the photo. i also think i have an outdoor box lying around (though i probably don't)

several standard toggle style w/sliders, a couple of push button sliders, and even a push button rotary knob. i'm sure one of these will do!

So speed control on exhaust and intake? Makes sense, WHY NOT go for complete control of the environment?! haha I have hopes for running single intake/exhaust fans. Given the overall size of the cabinet most of the hot air is naturally pulled up, given the height of the tent.

That statement was about the sum total of my knowledge before i started this project. I'm learning quite a bit, nice to have such knowledge on tap!
Thank you!

Honestly, I have considered horizontal, i have an extra shelf (3 actually) that would work great, already a screen of metal rail. what scares me is the veg time needed to really have a good screen established before flowering looks like a pain. i figured vertical would be easier on the plant and more natural (lazy )
honestly the first grow will probably be topped

again thanks for the help! now clear one thing up for me. you are referring to another "Dub", just one I'm not familiar with, right?

Be careful, the light dimmers do not control fans very well, they have a different resistance and can over heat and cause a fire easily. A fan control knob is a bit more expensive than a light dimmer.

Personally, if your going to top it or LST it your going to be stetting the stage for an easy horizontal ScrOG, you will not stress the plant as long as you bend the stems when they are green and pliable and not woody yet. A horizontal scrog is more natural to the plant than you think. I would LST and ScrOG it, let it grow about 4"-6" high (clone of course, a seedling may not be mature enough at this height) then tie the top completly sideways. That will be the only LST required. Switch lights to 12/12 and the plant will start it's stretch. Immediately put a screen about 2" above the top of the plant so it can grow up to it. When it gets to the screen tie it down and it will shoot up new growth. Tie the new growth down until the end of the first month of 12/12 and you should have a good filled screen that will be a nice landscape of buds at a perfect height for soaking up all available light. I say LST over topping because it will immediately give you more tops and it is lower stress than topping.

I'm not Dub, I'm GangaGreg420, or just Greg ... Dub passed back in April. It is a long story but basically we were friends on OverGrow.com before the government smashed it. We remained friends and one day he called me to tell me he had Hep. C and was going to pass within the year. I was in a bad place where I was at so he offered to fly my across the country so I could grow for him. The only stipulations were that I had to try aeroponics for his sake and organics for the other patients sakes. Dub was growing for 6 other terminally ill people, I now grow for them. Dub taught me a lot but I'm guessing he forgot more things about growing than I have learned yet. Dub did not want his dying friends to be getting their medication from the street pharmacist because of all the usual reasons. Varying quality and expensive price along with legal reprocussions. I provide their medication for free, most of them can barely afford their treatment. Dub was a good man, he has opened my eyes and I will never grow commercial pot again for money. Let's just say that it took me losing one of my closest friends to chase away my green eyed monster. I will not sell anything to a dying person and I do not sell to dealers for $$ on the side, no matter how hard up for money I am. So basically that is the short version of the story.

RIP Dub

~GG420

For more information about Dub, here is my post from when I joined back using his name...
GangaGreg420 is back... for a moment.

... and him talking about his illness and me coming up to take over in the first part of his SOG thread.
