Question when flowering how shallow can i keep my tray

ill prob have like 4 or 5 plants in a loose media hybrid ebb and flow setup, how much room do u think the roots need to grow w/out strangling each other or clogging drains, also is it really safe to trim roots and wont it effect yield?
my space is small that is why i wanna keep the resevior outside the area. any ideas would help i got a while b/4 i actually biuld anything

I have grown 6 quite happily in the same system and found no problems with a tray that is 1 meter by 50cm by 20cm deep.
