With that amount it's best to use the crock-pot approach or just keep pourin on the water, it will still bond. The water spaces out the butter so you can use more weed. Just keep it all well-submerged and be sure to strain out the worst of the stuff in the end product. Cheesecloth is sometimes difficult to maneuver with batches of that size, so depending on how finely you chop your weed, you might even use a pasta strainer. But, remember, the more finely-chopped, the better.
