ok so i have all this awesome space to grow my plants but theres one problem, my storage room is also my furnace room and my furnace runs on gas will this be a problem growing with cfl i know they dont give off much heat but will this be ok.......and another question i have is i wanna grow 5 plants in there how may cfl lights would i need for veg and flowering thxs

but seriously, thats not a risk i'd wanna be taking be taking. you risk enuff just growing, no need for added bullshyt. all it takes is a spark, just 1....think it thru carefully 1st.

Well if you're serious about making sure everything is right, first step would be go to lowes or home depot and get a thermometer hygrometer. I know at the Lowe's here, it was in the garden center, just outside. Once you know what the temp/humidity in there is, you can decide if it's fine, or if the next step is ventilation. Hell, you might even need to purchase a humidifier if your climate is really dry, cause when humidity is higher, it's easier to cool the given space.

Anyways, you could start all five with just a couple 23Watts, but in just a couple weeks you'll definitely wanna have at least 50 watts per plant, and in a couple more weeks you'll ideally want 100W per plant, or some people here use like 40W per sq. foot. Honestly for 5 plants, you should really consider HID lights, at least for flowering. You should take some pics, or give us the specs of the room so we can help better.

jojaxx... just because there is a furnace doesn't mean one spark will blow it all to bits - you watch too many movies. You can take a lighter and hold the flame next to the furnace and nothing will happen.

kushking - is this the type of furnace with a flame at the bottom? just make sure to keep enough distance between the furnace and the plants, maybe block it off with some sort of gating. I wouldn't think there would be much to worry about though. if your lighting and wiring were so faulty that it would cause problems, you'd be in trouble weather there was a furnace in the room or not. just be smart about it, furnace or no furnace.

Looks like you have plenty of space, which is good. First of all you should decide how you're gonna do everything. Growing in soil, or hydro? Depending on what system you use, you may need to spend a decent amount of time setting it up. Once you get a thermometer/hygrometer, you'll know what you need to do. You should aim for 70-80 degrees, and 50-60 humidity.

HID = High Intensity Discharge. There's multiple types, the common ones being Metal Halide (CMH or MH), or HPS (High Pressure Sodium). You have to have a ballast to power these lights though.

If you live in a big town, you might be able to find some Fox Farm Ocean Forest, if not, you should order online. You could also use moonshine mix, which is Fox Farm's Ocean Forest, Light Warrior, and Potting Mix.
