I've got one 27watt CFL and two 26watt CFL's. All three are slightly touching each other. Only the bulb part is touching, the ballasts aren't. They never get that hot because a fan is constantly blowing on them. Is there any sort of danger in doing this other than accidentally breaking them?

Thats the thing, its pretty hard to have them not touch since the plant is still small. (It's 10 days old) The plant is now literally covered in light so if its not a fire hazard or anything it'd be awesome if I could keep them as is. The way I see it is if it lowers the life of the bulbs or could damage them I'm not too concerned. They are so cheap that the positives would outweigh the negatives in that respect. The plant itself looks like its loving life. All I've got is a crappy webcam but heres a pic:

totally speculating here, so i could be totally wrong and your house could explode tomorrow in a big cloud of mercury vapor....

i do not see any reason at all why CFL bulbs touching would be dangerous... unless they get hot spots and shatter. they are just glass with gas inside that has electricity passing through it.

again though, that is just the opinion of some stoned fucker on the internet

BTW, should one break, your plants underneath them will get dosed with a nice cloud of mercury and other toxic heavy metals. to say it would make the plant unsmokable would be an understatement.

Good point, mercury laced bud doesn't sound too appetizing, lol. The thing is they won't be touching when the plants get bigger; I've got an excellent fixture for them. As of now though the only way to put multiple lights on the plants involves CFL's touching. These CFL's never get hot really or anywhere near the point where they burn when touched so I'd be amazed if heat caused them to burst. Also considering how fast these babies grow at this age I'll have to move the lights farther apart in a couple days anyways.

it is okay if your cfls touch they are glass glass is non reactive to well anything i can thing of and will not transfer and arc of electricity. just as long as they arent clangin around too hard it'll be fine
