heard it said on a different site that flour lights lose affectivness deteriate in what is needed by plant is this true or close to truth or what please help to clear me up

Regardless of how close you put it... the bulb will put out less light at day 345 than it did at day 1....

Every light comes with what is called half life and at that time the light is no longer at full strength also at anytime pass the half life the bulb can and will burn out/stop working. For best results it is always better to replace the light just after half life.

i was once told to replace my hps bulb after 2 grows and they only a tenner from my local grow shop for the bulb

To just say replace after to grows is not enough info as to when that is because I can make one grow last longer than the bulb. So it is better to replace at half life. To find out what the half life is just read the package your light comes in. For example it makes 20,000 hours of light. Well at 20,000 hours it now is not as strong as the first hour and is going to die anytime now. But just because the package says 20,000 hours does not mean it will make it that long, and this can be for a whole bunch of reasons. So keep one close by just in case.

Tube fluoros are easy to tell when the time is near. Look at the ends of the tubes, over 3/4 of an inch of black. Get some new tubes. Ballasts also lose strenght over time and also need attention from time too time.

i run 12/12 on all my grows, which on average are 100 days...so that's 1200 hours per bulb per grow...i figure i should be able to get two, three maybe four grows before i've lost a significant percentage of the bulbs light...
