nice what cfls and how many
I presently have 6 plants in DWC and under CFL's. 3 vegging and 3 flowering. I also have another 5 in pots waiting to go DWC.
I'm trying for 1 plant to harvest every 3 or 4 weeks. So when I cut down a plant, I progress everything behind it, and move a potted plant to DWC.
Here's todays pics, starts with the smallest & most immature, and steps up to the oldest that'll be ready in about 2 weeks (hopefully).

nice healthy plants
When I first started, I grossly underestimated what wattage I needed, so...
I get my CFL's at the grocery store.
Veg closet has 8, 23W CFL's, 6 Daylight and 2 Soft.
Flower bench has 12, 23W - 9 Soft and 3 Daylight.
It's just not enough, so I'm going to increase my Veg closet to about 300 - 350W (strictly CFL's)
I've harvested one plant so far, the quality was excellent, but the Buds lacked mass (I got less than 1/2 oz).
So I've just ordered a 600W HPS and I'll add around 200W of CFL's as suplementary lighting.
Have a great weekend.
Hugo: that's the trade off for us. My state limits a dozen vegging to 6 flowering and no more than 1/2 lb on hand or they put you in a cage. Since I grow my own meds, and only for my self, everything is a set cost I can't pass on to anyone else. I don't think electricity is cheap anywhere but you can conserve. I believe CFL's burn cooler and are much more economical to run than other lighting options available at this time. If you use good nutes, and you know what you're doing, our meds are just as good as the stuff you buy at the dispensary and DIY they are a lot less expensive. Our buds are never going to be as tight or dense, or as pretty as those you see in "HIGH TIMES" centerfolds but I can live with that. My friends who grow under HPS and HID lighting produce tight dense buds and they have an electric bill that would choke a horse. My level pay electric bill is so low that I don't even get one three or four months a year. That's our trade off and I'm very happy. It sounds like you're getting there too. Just wait till you try T-5's. that's when the love affair with fluorescent lighting really starts. HSA
lookn very nice there, sounds like a solid plan also.
While my comments here may seem to be thought out intelligent dialect, sometimes helpful, sometimes, silly, immature, offensive, or ignorant. This is just a character for online expression of personality, for MY entertainment, Not yours..
HSA - I agee with what you've said. Overall cost and power consumption are less with CFL's.
My grow, needs a lot more light. This wasn't a rash decision, I did a lot of thinking about cost, power, space, etc..
My flower area needs twice the light (or more), so the cost of the extra CFL bulbs, fixtures, and reflectors to do the job was considerably more than the cost of a single 600w HPS system ($182 to my door).
600w CFL, or 600w HPS, the power consumption is the same, but the HPS provides more candlepower/lumens.
Even with the extra 600w, my peak daytime power usage will be apx 1200w, at night 350w.
I'll always ue CFL's for my veg closet, no heat, no smell.
Thanks again guys.
