Would this be ok lighting for 4 plants?

How many would i need? If you can find any cheaper, or better that'd be nice too.
I'm on a low budget, this would be my first grow indoors.

That would work - a single 400 watt Metal Halide.

Most people use the Metal Halide for vegging and a HPS for flowering.

You can get a switchable ballast (for a few bucks more) which will fire both types of bulbs.

I use 400 watt Metal Halide to veg and 400 watt HPS to flower.

Sorry, I'm a little on the blonde side. So are you saying just one of those will be good to grow 2-4 plants in lets say a 4ft x 4ft closet

You do realize thats an ad for just a bulb? Your gonna need a ballast and hood/reflector for that bulb and thats a couple hundred. I got a complete 400 watt switchable ballast mh/hps and econowing reflector with hps bulb for 175.00 I thought it was a great deal. I also bought from home depot 2 4 foot t-12 shoplights that I use to veg my girls for 45 dollars but thats not eough light for flower but they work great in my opinion for veg. Also bewareof heat issues if you do get the hps Im growing in my closet and the only way to maintain temp is a 6 inch fan blowing directly on the bulb so My plants are 12 inchs away without burning them another fan circulating air in the closet ad also keeping the closet doors open for the light cycle and closing it when its off Im making do with what I have and my ladies are turning out great feel free to check out my thread and see Hope I helped.

Yes, but as the guy said before, that is only the light you will need a ballast.

I use a switchable ballast MH/HPS 400 watt running a Sun Systems Air Cooled Hood, with a 4 inch Fan 190cfm and a carbon filter.

In a 3 X 4 X 7ft grow box
