    Default Jiffy cup concerns....

    Hi all,

Well, I started my second grow (first turned out all male) on saturday with 2 femmed white rhino beans. They germed in a shot glass of water, then after the tap root was showing I put them in some jiffy cups l that can be put directly in the soil, and soil of course. Out of curiousity(after sowing) to see how people did with them, I did a net search. I came back with only like 3 comments on it, and they were not too positive(saying they have bugs, roots cant penetrate, ect.).

What I'm wanting to know is are there any people on here that have any experience with them that would be more informative than the "slim-pickin' " info I got searching. I dont want to waste my quality seeds using something that will screw up my plant in the longrun. I feel like a douche for not checking beforehand, but it was an impulse purchase, and thought the less shock transplanting to a bigger pot the better, right??

(sigh....trials and tribs of a new grower...)

peat moss cops are fine. The only thing is youll have to keep an eye on your moisture levels. They can dry out fast and they can hold too much moisture also. Other than that you have nothing to worry about transplanting couldn't be easier.

a good grow friend of mine on this site uses them and he says he has no issues with them at all.. i have even bought a few with the dome from home depot myself after talking to him, but i have as of yet to try them myself.. i wasn't sure if i should germ them first in a paper towel like i usually do, or just sow the seed in the jiffy pots? im glad i ran into this thread, lol.. keep us updated how you make out with them..

i tried them during my first grow on an impulse like you, lucky for me i also bought rockwool cubes and peat pellets,so i could compare the 3 .rockwool works best then peat pellets and after that i never bought a peat pot again.their to much work to make sure the miosture is always right.rockwool and pellets you just water walk away and wait for visible roots and then stick them in soil just like peat pots with alot less work or worry.hope this helps.

Thanx for all the responses. Sounds like all I have to do is be up Jiffy cup's metaphorical ass about it's moisture levels. Will keep all posted. Thanx again!

I have been using Jiffy 7 peat pots since christ was a cowboy. I buy them by the 1000's.

I use a standard tray and high humid dome. I put 2 liters of water with 5 ml of Liquid Karma in the tray (ph6.0) and add 32 pucks. Put them on the heating pad and let soak for 1 hour (78F). I empty the excess water so it just covers the top of the raised bottom. Put my clones in cover and under the lights. I open the air holes all the way on the top of the domes. They need to be watered every 3 to 4 days. I will lose 1 or 2 some times but the rooting rate is 99%.

I like rock wool cubes but they allow the clone next to it to grow into the cubes around it. To many broken roots for me and you need to transplant sooner with rockwool.

    Peace

Another question: I also got the Organic Seed Starting Jiffy-Mix (since it was right next to the cups..damn impulse). Will dropping the plant into a larger pot of non organic soil shock the plant? I was gonna use the soil from my first grow, since I grew them just fine in it(despite sexing male).

    Default Jiffy Pots FTW

I just started using Jiffy pots recently because I heard they help plants grow. I am very good at growing all kinds of plants no matter what kind it is from flowers to vegetables and even my famed Maui Waui and White Castle. This is the first time I have used the peat pots and so far they work great. I germinated some seeds iin a paper towel like I usually do and planted them in the Jiffy Peat Pots that I have and put them in my dome, I also just planted some seeds in the soil in the dome to see if that would work as well. So far the seeds I planted in the soil in the dome have produced more plants than the ones I germinated and they are growing faster as well. In my opinion the Peat Pots work great except they hold way to much water if you are not watching carefully.

The actual "Jiffy Cups" that expand when you add water are fine to use with seed or cuttings.
This type of tray (in the bottom left) sucks ass for starting seeds, bigtime. My seedlings were so deeply wounded by the root lock these caused, I almost scrapped all 50 of them. I will now only use the plastic greenhouse style trays and small pots.
My opinion on the 4" ones is still under consideration. I won't use them again, but I won't say they are horrible.
PS. the soil was shit too.
