I have been vegging this plant since December 18th. Thus is day one of 12/12 on Febuary 8th. She has 23 main colas due to the LST technique. I have been using 3x26w 2700k cfls, and 3x26w 6500k cfls. This calculates out to 156 actual watts, putting out 9500 lumens. In my 2x2 space this is 2375 lumens per sq ft. so needless to say im ready for my 400w hps/mh...come on uncle sam!!! i also figured up 61 lumens/watt. a 400w hps with cool tube is spitting out 50,000 lumens. the cool tube will enable me to ventilate my grow space and still use a ton of light. i figured this up as well...ulti lumenx 400w hps - 50,000 lumens - 12,500 lumens/sq ft - 125 lumens/watt...but....i was also thinking of another light that might better suit my small personal medicinal garden. the sun system 150w hps. its rated for 16000 lumens. out of the same 150watts of consumption as the cfls i get 4000 lumens / sq ft at 107 lumens/watt.
so the cool tube 400 is 170.00 the sun system is 70... the cool tube is more powerful, but im afraid i wont be able to utilize the full 400w output. and being a hippie i would feel bad wasting something.
feel free to help me with my quandry.

wassup bro i would get a ballast so you can controll how much watts your putting out and so you wont waste any also, it is a bit pricie but well worth it also helps you keep you bulbs longer and they wont burn out easilly look into it bro i reccomend it. hope ypu post some pics up i would love to see ur lady. good luck and keep it green and keep on growing.

thanks man, im guessing what you were refering to is a dimmable ballast. the one i was wanting has this feature. so for the extra hundred bucks i get a glass tube and the abilty to run the light at 200 300 or 400w. i have all the hardware needed to hook up the glass tube (fan and ducting). i really appreciate your response because it made me realize that the 400w is a better buy. the reason being, a 400w digital ballast running at 50% takes almost the same power as a magnetic 150w. so thank you bro for making me think about that. i posted those pics, but they are about a week old. im going to post updated pics when my camera charges. laters

Im going to buy a 150 watt hps sun light fixture aswell, im also going to buy 2 45 watt cfls to throw in my growbox to make sure my bottom leaves get a good amount of light.. a 400w hps/mh is good too but i would rather go with something that fitts your needs, if your only growing 1 plant i would go with the 150w hps but if you want to grow any more than a couple of plants i would go with the 400w hps/mh...

dude best way to suit your grow put 2 150watt hps lights in there and use cfls for side lighting. I know a guy thats got 2-150watt hps and 150watts of cfls and he recently just harvested a crop of 4.5 ounces from one plant supercropped.

I have done that I. The past and I found that the light dosnt distribute so evenly. The 400 will give more light and alot more lumens cuz when u use two 150 instead of you thinking u got 300 u really got around 275 watts up to you and how ur budget is and what u prefer. Either way you will get some dank dense big nuts

Yes the wattage and lumens are better with the 400watt hps BUT!! he still may Get better results with the 1or2 150watt hps and I will tell you why, in a 2x2 area, 1or2 150watt hps run much, much cooler then a 400watt hps. expecially if he doesnt have much to circulate air in his space.the average 400watt hps puts out 34-39C in a 2x2 space without sufficent circulation. Where as 1 or even 2 150watt hps will only put anywhere from 26-30C in a 2x2 space also he can get the 150watt hps up closer to the plants without burning. MAKE SENSE!!

also man if you can put some blue cfls in that flowering room mixes up the UV's which will result in better trichomes
  9. eliasson420's Avatar
joseph, by blue cfls do you mean high kelvin (5000 - 6500K) or actually blue "party" bulbs?

i had to compare the two so i could see it for myself.

    150w hps (165w actual draw) x2
    32000 lumens
    actual draw 330w

400w hps/mh w cool tube and dimmable feature
    actual draw
    100% 415w - 50000 lumens
    75% 310w - 38000 lumens
    50% 205w - 24000 lumens

In conclusion, the 400w is more effecient due to its higher lumen/watt ratio. With the incorporation of the cool tube reflector and the dimmable feature, heat is no longer an issue. There are a few more "pros" for the 400w but im stoned and i wanna eat something. thank you and good day gentlemen (women)

good eye man!! forgot about that dimmable feature
