Autoflower Journal - 2 Nirvana Short Riders, 1 Bubblelicious 250 watt HPS

This is my 1ST autoflower grow, so any tips from people WITH experience will be greatly appreciated.

I am growing 2 Nirvana Short Riders, and 1 Nirvana Bubblelicious for this trial run. Here if a run-down of my setup: using small closet 2'x4'. I leave the doors open to help control heat and humidity. So far temps have stayed between 73-79°, humidity is between 60-68%. I'm using a 250 watt HPS bulb in an air cooled hood fixture.

Using Fox Farm "Happy Frog" soil in 3 gallon pots. I used about 2.5 gal water while mixing up my soil. The water was distilled, and to each gallon I mixed 2 ml Humboldt Roots, and 1/2 tsp of Humboldt Nutrients "Myco Madness", then Ph'd it to 6.4. I also added a 1lb bag of Perlite to a 2 cubic ft bag of the soil.

My grow is primarily for personal smoke, and to kill my curiosity about this autoflower hype that seems to be going around. Nirvana claims the Short Riders only take 60 days from seed to harvest, while I'm a bit skeptical, I am also hoping they're right. I know I'm going to get eaten alive for admitting this, but I don't do anything special when it comes to germination... I simply make a small hole in the soil, insert seed, cover with just a tiny bit of soil, then mist the area with Ph'd water to ensure it's plenty damp. The first Short Rider came up in 3 days, the second Short Rider broke soil in 5 days, and the Bubblelicious came out after 3 days, but it was started about a week later. I know I could have speed things up by using the most paper towel trick, but I wasn't in a hurry and didn't care if they took 2 Weeks to show their pretty faces. Plus, I've NEVER done them any other way, and have always stuck to the "Grow With What You Know" philosophy.

  1. Picture & Video update - Day 54

by , 07-19-2012 at 12:09 PM (Autoflower Journal - 2 Nirvana Short Riders, 1 Bubblelicious 250 watt HPS)
It's day 54 now. She's doing pretty good still. Starting to fill out. Temp in room is currently 73, humidity is 48%. I'm guessing I should be getting close to harvest, as these things seem to add 5-10% more weight every night. If she looks right, I will flush next week using Sledge Hammer and give her nothing but plain, ph balanced water until the end. I started using "Gravity" flower hardener in conjunction with the Fox Farm Lineup. We'll see how that does - at $26 for a small ...

  2. Another Picture update - day 45 & 43

by , 07-10-2012 at 03:00 AM (Autoflower Journal - 2 Nirvana Short Riders, 1 Bubblelicious 250 watt HPS)
Quick update on the fungus gnats - They are pretty well erradicated as far as I can tell, though I know there could still be some larvae lurking beneath the surface so I won't quit using the Azamax any time soon. This is what I think caused them to show up in the first place. I wasn't neccessarily over-watering my plants, but I didnt' wait long enough for them to drain off completely. I always water until I see water run-off in the saucer, the problem was when I moved the plant to it's new saucer ...

  3. Quick Update with premature bud porn included

by , 07-09-2012 at 08:51 PM (Autoflower Journal - 2 Nirvana Short Riders, 1 Bubblelicious 250 watt HPS)
So - I ended up donating the Bubblelicious to a friend. I'm actually on my way out the door to go check it out, and get some water/nute solution Ph'd for him.

Anyways - I'm on day 45 for the bigger girl, 43 on the smaller girl. They are doing great still. I can't believe how friggin tall these girls got - the name "Short Rider" was a bit misleading... maybe I just got a different Phenotype though. The taller one is approx 40" tall, the shorter one is maybe 3' tall. ...

  4. 7-5 picture update

Sorry about the quality of these pictures - it's the best I could do. Don't have great lighting, and using a cellphone camera to take them.

Anyways - here they are. These plants are moving right along. Haven't had any major problems other than a small # of gnats, but they'll be taken care of at lights out tonight. Going to hit them with some neem oil on the leaves, and a Azamax soil drench. They haven't harmed anything yet, just more of an annoyance than anything else.

  5. Herpes on my stalk?

by , 07-05-2012 at 09:20 AM (Autoflower Journal - 2 Nirvana Short Riders, 1 Bubblelicious 250 watt HPS)
So this may be completely normal, but I was wondering exactly what it is that I'm seeing? There are little white nubby things that look like the start of roots protruding out from the base of the stalk. They are even up about 4-5" from the base of the soil. Is this just some confused roots that tried to come out and died? I only see these on one plant - the other doesn't have them.

Also - you can see where there is paper-like material on it. The paper looking stuff peeled ...
