You think its bad now wait a few months. Plunging gas prices are a sign of the woes to come. Why do we have to buy into the whole family, car, suburbia lifestyle?
Has this situation happened to you?
You're talking to your parents about life and they say, "when I was your age(20s) I had a full-time job, house, car, etc" But then you look at your life and see that you have none of that right now.
Now my excuse is blaming the economy and the fact that in most states the prices for housing is still insanely high. So am I alone in this situation? Does anyone here have a home, great full-time job with benefits good pay and a car to go with it? I only know people with so-so jobs that rent and usually take transit, some with cars, but still live at home.

How old are you?
I know a few people with houses in their 20's, all of them had help from their families to get their house- they are also making payments on those houses... none are owned out-right.
I am 26 and i have had a full time job since 6 months b4 i graduated college 3 years ago (took me a little longer (4.5 years and that's with 2 years of summer school) for both degrees). I started low as i was an intern but i have gotten a steady raise each of the last 3 years and i get full health care and performance biased bonuses. I still not up to my expected pay but if everything continues as it has been i will be in 2 years, and i think a 5 year build up time is very reasonable in my field (mechanical engineer and graphic designer). and i bought my first house the end of march this year. And i get to type on here so i can't really complain.
and being single helps a lot in buying the things i want lol.

90 and 91 were the biggest birth years in decades, those kids, i guess you, are not hitting the job market. The ones that did not go off to college went to work in 09-10, they have bad jobs as the economy was bad. The kids that went to 2 year schools are now out this summer and looking (my son is one but has a good full time job becasue he had specialized). The job market right now faces the kids that did not go to school, the kids dropping out becasue mom and dad can swing it and loans are hard to get, and the thrid factor is the returning US service men and women. All this is happening at once for the first time in history and at a time when we cant afford to grow and add jobs. Dont blame yourself just keep plugging along. I can tell you in the 80s when things were tough I was in the same position and I worked three jobs to make it. Not saying you are not trying but what is better , playing x box or getting a few part time jobs until such time as you run accross an opportunity to enhance your future. Good luck.

A university degree makes this goal quite UN-achivable.
I was a second year undergrad student when I was 20 (Ontario mandated grade 13 for University applicants) and did not finish my schooling for another five years, I also knew lot's of friends who jumped into the workforce and made great money working on assembly lines, and moved out to live the good party life; but when hard times hit (closing assembly lines) they are now forced to re-train and find other work.
Trying to own your own home at 20 is a little over ambitious, I say having a good education a stable job and a solid plan for your future at 20 is much more attainable.

I have a full time job, but at 11 dollars an hour I feel like i'm just working to stay above the water. I went to school out of HS and got a two year degree which did shit all for me. I'm working on starting my own business at the moment.
Yeah, I am thinking the same thing.
So many times I have been working at a company and they promise to give me a better position with higher pay, so they give me more and more work, I do it, but then they realise they dont have to give me the better position because I am now doing the work of two jobs. So they keep me at the same pay, just a lot more work. I hate when they do that because they know people are desperate for work.
