Cool Question about phenotypes and potency
I'm seeing a lot of new strains that claim that they come from two parents, each with their own desirable trait, and the resulting offspring has both traits.

For example, the new Purple Wreck strain takes a moderate THC-producing plant that is purple, which is then crossed with a crazy potent plant like Trainwreck, and VOILA, we now have weed that is both purple and potent.

I was wondering if there is REAL genetic truth behind such marketable claims, or if anyone has anecdotes that they'd like to share.

Phenotype is the physical presentation (a.k.a. expression) of any organism. Genotype is an organism's full genome, whether expressed or not.

And the answer is that it actually depends. Some phenotypical characteristics are going to be dominant, and some are going to be recessive. Some may be attached to "bad" genes (disease or deformity causing genes) and further breeding makes formerly recessive traits more easily expressed. THEN, and this one is a new branch entirely, there is epigenetics.

But, in essence, the answer is that genetics are proven, and yes, even with regard to weed. It does mean that you probably have to keep really close track, as well as must be able to closely control who breeds with whom.

Kindprincess is very knowledgeable about this stuff.

Phenotypes are the physical characterisitcs the plant displays, genotypes are the possible phenotypes the plant has, the gene pool so to speak... Beat me to it seamaiden!
