Transferring from Soil to DWC

Hello,

Currently have a few babies growing up in the 3.4 gallon superroot air pots and they have been wanting to expand their root base into a DWC. They are currently in soil with a layer of hydroton at the bottom. The question is if the roots will expand through the holes and the hydroton if placed into a DWC pot or if some of the soil would need to be washed off of the bottom roots.

Any help would be great.

Interesting stuff. I'm not an expert but wouldn't a wick system be a little easier?
