Does the Length of 'Day' (lghts on PLUS lights off), Have to be 24 hours?

I am wondering, has there been any research on the effect of changing the total length of day been conducted? What is the real trigger of flowering, shortened day or lengthened night?

We live on this planet with a 24-hour day, so we naturally assume our plants days have to be 24-hours schedule as well. But, a plant in continuous light has no night! Night apparently is not required for the plant to live. In fact, the plant thrives in comparison to a plant in an 18/6 light regiment.

So, we change the light regiment to 12/12, so the plant flowers. What makes it flower, the 12 hours of light OR the 12 hours of night? What happens if it gets 13/12 or 15/12? How about 24/12 or 36/12? Changing a plant from vegetative to flowering (flowering) or from to flowering to vegetative (regeneration) takes 10 days to two weeks, before the plant shows a response to the new light regiment. Maybe we could use a 100/12 cycle?

This could substantially improve efficiency I would think.

Help!

The plants require 12 hours of complete, uninterrupted darkness to flower.

I experimented with a 16/12 cycle (easiest thing to program on a 7-day timer) and didn't notice much of a difference. I don't think it slowed the flowering time either.

I've read a lot of speculation, but haven't seen much results myself.

LOL Typical stoner 'What If'? Question.

What if the moon was made of cheese? eh?

No WAY! You can go change your light timer right now to whatever you'd like but you can't go to the moon and ask it to change itself. (If you did the moon would probably tell you to fuck off anyway). So this is totally not a stoner question. Also I'm pretty sure a cheese moon would get space mould and we all know what happens after you get the space mould.

very very interesting. What if you made the whole day only 12 hours. 6 hours of light and 6 hours of dark. That would be insane if you had the same amount of growth rather than 12 12. This is a great proposal. Will be watching for experiments.

I would think that it would not make much of a difference since by the end of the grow, at chop time, your plant will have still received the exact same amount of hours of light and darkness weather it saw 6/6, 12/12, or 24/24 hour cycles.

I'm no botanist but I would assume that there are different activities going on inside of your plants at the beginning of the day or night cycle than at the end of the day or night cycle. If the length of day and night were changed that may effect the plant negatively. Or, maybe it would produce more yield or something who knows Id love to see it tried.

I am pretty sure that if you started a plant on 9 hours of light and 3 hours of flower that it would successfully go through a vegetative state. Then if you cut it down to 6 hours light and 6 hours of darkness I believe it would successfully flower. I am not to sure if this would cut the life cycle of the plant down to much. I am just very intrigued to see if you could cut the plant whole life cycle in half. Like finish a plant in about a month and a half rather than 3 months. Dont think it will work but I am very interested to see. Shit I might try this my self!!!

Cannabis requires 12 continuous hours of complete, uninterrupted darkness to flower.

I have been thinking about this for quite some time, but I don't have an answer. I think 12 hours of night is required for flowering, but am not sure. Maybe a 12/1 would even work, implying that it's 12 hours of light that is needed. There has to be a logical answer, even before testing is done.

Guy's, keep talking. I think we have a solution between us!

LOL typical uneducated, untested response to get your name on this thread.

Yes you can do it, I've heard of people doing 9/3 cycles and switching to 6/6.
It can and will work, but the results are usually worse or equal.
It's all about personal choice and what you'd like to do.

Plants respond to environmental stimuli, not digital timers and phosphorus packed food.
Cannabis does NOT need exactly 12h to flower. It could care less, the whole point of 12 hours is that that's what happens in nature.

Plants flower when they notice the long hours of sun receeding, and they feel that they can't take advantage of the weather much longer, so they begin to flower in order to reproduce and carry on the species. Their entire goal is to reproduce before the weather kills them, and the new seeds will carry on the species. They won't care if they're getting 11 hours of night, they will flower.

Yo C. you know i usually agree wth you as you know your shit but I would have to think that maybe due to millions of years, basically since the beginning of this planet, all plants including marijuana have seen 12/12 (roughly) cycles their whole lives; maybe it is in their genetics to perform their best at these 12/12 light cycles. You have kind of agreed with me "It can and will work, but the results are usually worse or equal." I think that even though it will work, the results will always be less than full potential, so I wouldn't advise anyone to use this method. And it will not speed up flowering time, which wouldn't be a good thing anyways because you would yield less, unless the plants performed better under these light conditions, which they clearly will not.

Good info too I didn't know exactly whyplant flowered, (or how they think about it :-o).

Jesus Christ people. Before you go buying new timers and getting a hard on about discovering some
Magical way to grow weed let me bust out a couple facts for you. No I'm not going to drop links but feel free to google shit about plants that is not posted in marijuana forums, you may, just may, actually learn something about plants that may prove useful.

Let me just laugh the fuck out loud about the "plants Don't need 12 hours of dark to flower they sense that the summer is over and need to carry on their genes" I am a botanist actually so let me lay down some facts for you: they don't NEED 12 dark, 10 actually works. So does 11,12, 13, and 14. Plants produce a hormone called florigin all the time but it is rapidly degraded by light. Flowering is triggered by a given level of florigin...depending on the species. So when it's dark enough, long enough, there is enough florigin and they start to produce flowers.

Now to the light cycle. Plants, just like animals, have a circadian rythmm. Yes, it has to do with living innthis planet for millions of years. This rhythm is not set in stone, it does SLOWLY change in plants but their are limits. Putting the plant through some contrived light cycle isn't going to help anything at all and I would bet good coin it would
actually decrease yield.

Why would you think that it would? Plants can not be "tricked" people. If you want more
info ( and debunk the whole 24/7 lights on veg bullshit). Just google
Photosynthetic rates and circadian rhythms and flowering. There are several journal articles that you don't need subscriptions to read that have published data on the effects of different light regimes
On plants. Just don't get high before trying to read them.
