How much is too much???

Everything Ive read preaches the more light the better...however this truth must clearly have limits. I just bought a 1000 watt system to finish flowering my first 3 plants because im going to need this system (plus some) for my new setup in my house in five weeks. The system can be set at 400/600/1000 watts and I clearly want to give my girls the most they could ever utilize but i dont want to burn/shock them.

Stats:
-Two sativas and one indica in the first week of flowering
-1000 hps capable of 155,000 lumens
-Grow space is maybe 18 sq feet in a walk in closet with a fan and a humidifier going

much love!

@ace11,
ok now if your looking for nutrients i recommend Cutting Edge Solutions. Its easy and makes your girls look really pretty and healthy...and you wont have to worry abut any nutrient burn. Now just to give u and idea i have a 6x6 room and i got 2 plants..i have a fan for intake and outake and one inside that moves the air around..i think the best temperature are 72-78. and humidity about 25-35. now i also use alot of additives like humboldt honey,Carbo Load from advanced, and chaching from fox farm...and lemme tell u i yield about 1-1 1/2 pounds

12 oz of bud per plant...indoor?... I smell bullshit.

back to the question.. that is not too much light. A good guideline is AT LEAST 50 watts/ square foot. You are around 80. AS long as you don't burn your plants from the light being too close your fine. It will be a question of economics really (and more importantly, heat management).

Whats your reason for humidity 25-35? Ive heard the 60-70 is better...thoughts?
If you're humidity is too high during flowering, you run the risk of fungi.

1000 watts should suit those plants just fine.

There are more than a couple benefits of having lower humidity (and higher temperatures), increased resin production and plant growth to start. 25-35 is hard to get to and i wouldnt reccommend until you have a litlle more experience with low rh. Aim for 40 to start out.

It's always better to have 2much light as opposed to not enough. Just curious though, If you just got your setup what did you veg with??? CFL's???

How tall are your plants? and how thick and bushy are they?? Reason I ask is if they are on the short side and not to dense then you can set your light at 600w and achieve the same results as using the 1000w setting. At 600w's theres less heat and you can get the light closer to your plants tops thus better penetration and higher lumen use effeciency ...jmo

I beg to differ

Thanks for the info, im gonna turn off my humidifier and let it return to the room's natural humidity of 25-30%. Since this is my first grow I used one sativa as a control and did not perform any alterations to its grow process, the other two were LST'd and FIM'd. They were vegged with a 150 watt light for about 5 weeks. Sorry Im new but how do i post these pics I took of them that are on my desktop, the only option I see is inserting a URL?

I have used a 1000w in an area about the same as yours, but now for veg I use 6 T5's IMGP4553.jpg I think they are doing great and no heat.. IMGP4551.jpg (30 days from seed) for flowering I will add a 600w Hps... I use the flora series, without good nutrients all the light wont help. Excess light = heat

I don't understand why 12 ounces a plant is so doubtful? It was my first time growing with two plants each with their dedicated 400w light, but I easily got 10 ounces a plant (stem-free, cured, beautiful bud) and over another 10 ounces of crystalline trim and not-so-smokable buds, all still with plenty of potency.--Yeah, they were 4X7 monsters (hence all the non-smokable trim) but they put on weight like there was no tomorrow in my modded waterfarms.

I don't believe there is such a thing as too much light (Although LEDs will bleach nugs white, as experienced by a recent poster) but there is definately too much heat. I find it's how you use the amount of usable light that matters the most.. And I totally agree that if you have wispy plants that have not been trained and most of your light hits the floor and not something green, then you are wasting your money on lighting. Financially, yes, there is too much light, physiologically for the plant, you're never gonna get to the point where it sees too much.

Yeah, I stopped by my local hydro store and they make hella heat when you have multiple bulbs. Shit, for that matter, the built-in little ballasts on CFLs in an enclosed space can start to cook things and turn themselves a little charred color. (The glass don't get hot but the base can get steaming.) T12 shoplights don't seem to make a ton of heat as long as they aren't set directly on top of things and have more than enough uumph for the first week or two of germination, then I'd go T5 or low-wattage MH after that, depending on space needs, etc.
