Default Does anyone else just use basic nutes?

I've been using GH Flora series for quite a number of years. I only use Grow, Micro and Bloom, none of the others. Before that in soil I just used Peters products and those are the only two ferts I've ever used. Most of the grow I use GH's recommendations as to ratio. As far as TDS it depends on what I can get away with depending on where the plant is in life and the strain. Except for some fungi that are for the roots I use nothing else. Plants are healthy with good yields.

Potency is excellent. That is not only my opinion but the opinion of friends who've smoked for decades and have access to other strains and grows. My point is I don't think I am missing much with regards to yield or potency with my particular strains just using the basics.

I see so many "extras" that it appears almost everyone seems to use that I wonder if maybe I am missing something. I'm certainly confused and am new to being on grow forums. I really don't understand how you would need extra additives if you are already giving the plants what they need. If so if you could show me empirical data of why an additive helps and real world studies. I apologize but opinions just don't set well with me. I am the first to admit I have a lot to learn when it comes to horticulture and the more I can learn the better. Any help is appreciated.

i use just basic nutes. I used to us Fox Farms basic lineup, grow big / tiger bloom, got decent results, but now I'm trying dyna-gro, still just veg and bloom nutes. i choose not to buy into the marketing hype that surrounds the more expensive products. The basic nutes DO contain all the plant needs to thrive. if you have the money to throw into your operation, go for it. I doubt any of the fancy products will necessarily HARM your plant, but I can't say how much it will help, if at all (not counting the placebo effect).

when someone does a side by side comparison with multiple clones and multiple genetics in a controlled experiment, then maybe we can see the true benefit of the expensive additives. who knows when that day will come

I'm a fan of Dyna-Gro. I use the grow and tekt (silica+potassium supplement) as well, for a full nutrient regimen in DWC.

I've noticed the girls will feed more heavily and grow a hell of a lot stronger with the silica supplement. Definitely helps with heat tolerance as well, an issue in my climate.

This current cycle I'm flowering with the grow formula and not bloom formula... still waiting on the chop but they look good. I may just stick with the grow+ tekt, the grow is so high in P and the tekt adds K, makes for an easy single formula feeding all through veg and flower.

warnerwh, you will still get good bud using only bloom nutrients but just not as much as with a good boost, i believe the boost mainly work by increasing the metabolism of the plant making it able to consume more food, a bit like how people can consume alot more food when in the midst of a severe munchie situation due to weed (stimulant) than they normally would, so if that person had a munchie attack evry meal for extended periods they would end up being fatter/bigger than if they ate normally, this holds true for plants too, morbidley obeese plants is a good thing but not neccaserily natural, then again nor is adding certain fertilisers and specific times of their life cycle, in nature seeds would just fall and root where they lay, then they would just have the soil to rely on for nutrients, so what im trying to say i guess in a rambling fashion is that were allready dictating the plants growing conditions, may aswell be hung for a sheep as a lamb, try a boost and see for yourself, personally ive tried bloombastic (dont know if this qualifies as a boost) and canna boost, which is the most expensive out the two but in my opinion by far the best, a friend of mine grows the same plants as i do each time we have similar set ups except that he wont use anything but miricle grow, he still produces nice tasting effective weed but the difference between our crops is night and day.........................try it you might like it cheeers

I also don't use any supplements-- other than a bit of Cal-Mag. I stick with the FF basic line, and am currently considering trying Dynagrow as well as Organicare. I was hoping to get a sample of the FF supplements, just to test them out on a grow (supplements with one clone, no supplements with the other).

There is a basic tendency of people to believe the new things they try succeed more than they actually do. This tendency led the Italians to grow their grapes up olive trees until recently, and led mj growers to drive nails through the stems of their plants during flowering. There is always a way to justify the approach with 'science' or 'common sense.' That is not to say that supplements don't work, it's just that I need to run a controlled experiment for myself before I join the band wagon.

Besides, I grow more weed than I and my close friends could ever consume; I don't have much motivation to lay out the cash for purported 'boosted yields'

A good point well made, if your yeilding enough to get by and your happy dont worry about it but if your tight for space, making the most out of each plant is vital, also i think trying new things is part of progress and without such trial and error we wouldnt even be growing indoors under artificial light, cheeers

If you read up in uncle bens threads you find he and alot of his followers dont buy into the additive scam.basic npk ferts like jacks classic are all you need. That being said i bought into the hype and i use alot of time specific stuff, with good results. but i dont know how much better my plants are if any.I say if it aint broke, dont fix it.I just like doing things different from time to time or else i get bored.Uncle ben did post some very good info in the nute section a while back, def worth the time to read.

Uncle Ben and his 'followers' have it right. If you maintain robust roots and healthy foliage, a good harvest soon awaits. It doesn't take a genius to see that if a plant is growing just fine, you don't need to spend grip on bloom boosters and hardeners to bump up yield. Using a well rounded fertilizer from start to finish (YES just ONE NUTRIENT), you can manage great success. It's mind boggling walking into a hydro store or garden center these days. You just have to keep one thing in mind : those guys are there to make money just like everyone else , and they are damn good at getting it from you.
