im looking into getting a 300 watt 8u cfl light and reflector what size of a hps or mh would this be compared to?

Basically u can not compare cfls to HID Lights. this is kinda a dumb question. no offense,

about 20-30w of hps.........dont waste your time..you will be kicking yourself halfway through your grow for not doing it right the first time......i speak from experience......

yes hid is always superior..but there is a level of comparison

If you're going to get one light that pulls 300 watts make it an hid. If you really can only afford cfls it would probably be better to get a few lower wattage ones so you can put them all around your plants.
