Default Breeders only please; Selecting cross
The reason I put breeders only in the heading is that I would like hard info, not speculation but if you're not a breeder but understand enough about cannabis genetics, please share also.

Are there any phenos that typically make for a good drug strain that show up early so selections can be made without completing and testing after harvest? Also, what do you look for in a male that you are going to use to pollinate? Obviously vigorous growth but what else?

Branch and node spacing as well as branch thickness.

Not really much else to look for other than your mentioned vigorous growth at a young age.

Is potency regulated by a single allele? I'm trying to figure out how many phenos I would expect to have to test to verify an increase of potency over either parent strain on a hypothetical IBL cross. Also, is trichome development or size always correlate to potency?

Honestly, to add to my only things to look for are early flowering and size of male flowers to my earlier list.

The most potent plant might not pass on this trait, and the healthiest plant might not have favorable combining ability. Judging a male by visual appearance and also smoke testing, or using bio-assay, should not be discounted, but test crossing the male is the only way to determine it’s breeding potential.

Your VERY BEST bet is to follow those general guidelines that are listed above to pick the males. Then breed your plants - you will probably get a lot of different pheno's. FROM THOSE start to pick your REAL desirable traits. That is the way you will weed out the stuff that may just not want to pass on easily. Or if you get lucky you will find what your looking for from the strain and pass it on. So your goal should be to look at the two different strains and find decide your goals with them. (Example: One strain is bushy and heavy yielder and one is lanky but some dank smoke. Breed them and find the female that meets those qualities). You can from this point use the same old male if he produced offspring you wanted consistantly or you can start looking at your newly produced males. ... breed and breed some more.

Then start again start breeding > take seeds > grow >select > breed again.

Rinse and repeat until you have squared/cubed so many times the thing is an tetrahexoctohedron plant. (There isn't such a thing but you get the idea)

Sorry for the rambling but there are so many routes you can take when it comes to this, have fun with it and experiment. Just understand you will sometimes not get what you were after. Just have a goal in mind and shoot for it. You may not end up with what you were after in the end but usually it is all worth it.

i feel as though you are over complicating it. look for qualities from strains that you have IE taste effect of high.

so lets say strain A has a higher thc% thats great but does it produce the high you are looking for.
stran B is fucking great but has a lower thc% but i feel higher ect. chances are if you like others will 2

getting high is solely besed on THC%
there are 60 different cannaboids what each does and how it relates to the other a vastly unknown.

yes THC gets you high i am not saying it dosent but just THC its self would be more like marronol and thats know to get people sick. the reason that it is not prefered by paitens is because the effects from smoked cannabis are not present IE variation of cannaboids and their %

back to the suject
looks for fast trends in veg node devlopment rate of growth and the ability to take higher lvls of nutes

get a healthy male and a good fem
IE
(ak-48(f)X(red desil)(m)=f1 hybrid
F1x(back cross of favorite of strains)
keep moving until you get somthing you like

if people dont believe me on the THC vs cannaboids
duban posion 6% THC
RED D 18% THC

i was much more riped from durban and most people will agree

With partially dominant alleles, and heterozygosity its kind of impossible to know how generation 2 will come out, even if you grow out your initial cross for proper judgement.. You won't have a clear picture until after a few back-crosses..
Sadly there aren't many ppl with tight breeding programs just because of the space/time requirements to really see it through properly.. Mendel caught the trick right off the bat.. You gotta grow a ton over more than a couple generations to harvest the info you need for informed selection..
Negative traits are more often recessive than dominant thanks to evolution.. Its less likely that parents homozygous with negative traits get to reproduce, but a parent can carry the negatives, and pass them on without expressing that themselves.. If both parents pass that recessive negative trait, then it will reappear in the offspring homozygously..
Luckily good flukes can still happen..
