They don't need to be changed daily. They should just be constantly moist (not soaking wet). For me, that means checking 4 times a day, and adding drops of water as needed (not like pouring it on).

Technically you may have killed them by putting cracked seeds in a cup of water...but probably not if it wasn't for too long. Just be patient. I think putting them in the cup of water for 12 hours at the beginning makes them germinate much quicker.
