Flushing is different than overwatering, flushing usually requires pour tons of water through the soil to get those nutes and salts out. Overwatering is when you cut off O2 to the roots by water too frequently. I always use about 2 to 3 times the water as the size of the pot so 3 gallons would require anywhere from 6 to 9 gallons. Also you could transplant instead and do a smaller flush but I did read about the lack of funds at the moment.
