At least 24 hours notice is common in most states. Some states require the notice in writing, some don't. Regardless of whether they have to give you notice and how much they have to give you, if the landlord sees your grow and calls the police you're basically screwed. No matter that the landlord was on the property illegally.

Just make sure your grow is out of sight, preferably behind locks that your landlord doesn't have a key to. Tell your landlord that you have a large reptile (in a cage, of course) but that you prefer to keep the room locked just in case he happens to escape his cage, or something like that.
