If you have the chance, keep it out of a pot. Though the UK and US climates vary the earth here and the earth there is 55 degrees. The tap root and others will grow deep and give the tree a dark green start because of the steady temperature it's growing in. Pot's heat and cool, causing stress related stunting problems in citrus. If you want to help the seed find water dig up around 2x2x1 patch of tilled earth. Loose soil is best a few medium sized rocks allow drainage and O2 into the root system. It's an efficient plant so water when soil is dry. Let dehydrate a little, plants thrive when their are forced to wait for needed water.

If you decide to stay with a pot, may advice may seem odd but go to the local hydroponic shop and start asking questions about soil for your situation. They may specialize in "soil-less" grows but they will educate anyone on soil when asked. Hope it helps, I'll be watching from across the pond.
