By starting out in pots that are simply too big for small seedlings you're creating far more problems for yourself further down the line than worrying about transplanting which is something you're going to have to do at some point if you hope to grow anything at all - so learn how to do it now and stop pissing about with gravel at the bottom of the pot - which isn't the problem.

Learn how to repot sucessfully.
(It's not my favourite thing to do either, but it has to be done, and it gets easier with experience!)
